Physical Geography at Exeter is diverse and leading-edge, with over 30 permanent academic staff. Our work is influential in shaping research agendas in fields that include biogeography, soil carbon research, climate change impacts on terrestrial ecosystems and coastal geoscience. Geographers at Exeter play leading roles in the associated Global Systems Institute, Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health and Centre for Resilience in Environment Water and Waste based at the University.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a fixed-term lecturer in physical geography, to run from September 2022 to June 2023 and to be based at the Exeter (Streatham) campus. This is an education and scholarship role to cover teaching and student support activities. The appointed candidate will therefore be expected to contribute to several existing modules in the BSc in Physical Geography Programme, including modules in physical geography fieldwork and research design, as well as more generic stage 1 core modules in physical geography covering the biosphere. In addition, the appointee will run tutorial groups across different stages and provide support for undergraduate research dissertations. Preference will therefore be given to candidates that can demonstrate some teaching experience in areas such as biogeography, biodiversity and climate change and its impacts on terrestrial ecosystems.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Contribute, as part of a team, to the coordination and delivery of teaching, marking and supervision for the BSc in Physical Geography
  • Deliver undergraduate teaching in the Department of Geography across a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures, ensuring content, methods of delivery and learning materials to meet the defined learning objectives.
  • Provide student support (including pastoral, tutorial, and other academic support) to students undertaking the BSc in Physical Geography
  • Develop own teaching materials, methods, and approaches.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Contribute to the general operation of the Department and Faculty as a member of its academic team.
  • About you

    • A PhD or equivalent in Physical Geography or relevant cognate subject in fields relevant to the areas outlined above
    • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
    • A demonstrable enthusiasm for scholarship in the fields associated with the post
    • Familiarity with the use of a range of geographical methods in physical geography.
    • Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students;
    • Participate in and develop external networks, for example, to contribute to student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, or build relationships for future activities;
    • Will have evidence of excellent teaching identified by peer review and have made an impact at discipline programme level beyond their own teaching;
    • Be expected to explore working towards Fellow of the HEA, if not already attained.
