Job Description

The Department of Music seeks to hire a Lecturer (Grade 6, spine point 31) specialising in the field of music history c. 1850–1950. The post holder will contribute to the research profile of the Department, while also engaging in research-led teaching, departmental administration, and pastoral support across our BMus and MMus degrees.   

We seek applicants who have a clear track record appropriate to their career stage as emerging global research leaders in music history, and who will contribute to our goals of delivering innovative, inclusive, diverse, and socially-engaged education.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in music, history, or a related humanities discipline, and publications appropriate to their career stage. They must be capable of delivering the following modules:

  • Level 4 Issues & Topics (19C Music, half module)
  • Level 4 Writing About Music
  • Level 5 Popular Music Studies
  • Level 6/7 Topics in Music Research: 19C Music
  • Level 7 Approaches to Music Research 2

They will be a highly effective educator, with demonstrable experience of teaching and assessment in Higher Education, strong evidence of commitment to student welfare, and an aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary and inclusive framework.

The post holder will also be required to take on the role of Departmental Senior Tutor, and deputise for the Department Education Lead as and when requested.

This post will be offered on  a fixed-term contract for 13 months 

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent, due to commence 1st September 2024.


Key responsibilities
  • Plan, organise and deliver outstanding teaching and assessment across our Programmes. 
  • Contribute to enhancing the research profile of the Department, Faculty and College through publications and other forms of output, which may include public-facing impact activities.
  • Provide high quality supervision of BMus and MMus dissertations, as required.
  • Assess coursework and examinations, including performance recitals.
  • Take oversight of the welfare of students in the department as Senior Tutor, and organise the personal tutor system.
  • Fulfil other administrative tasks as directed by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  • PhD in music, history, or a related humanities discipline. Applicants must have passed their viva/defence before 1 June 2024. 
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise in music history c.1850–1950. 
  • Clearly defined research interests and plans compatible with the research strategies of the Department, Faculty and College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.  
  • Experience of teaching topics in 19th-century music and popular music (broadly defined) at higher-education level, and the ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds. 
  • Strong evidence of commitment to student welfare, including providing academic advice, assessment feedback, and pastoral support (e.g. as personal tutor). 
  • Evidence of commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in the higher education workplace.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience of administration in educational and/or student welfare settings. 
  • A teaching qualification or work towards it, such as Fellowship of the HEA or equivalent.
