Lecturer in Marine Conservation

Based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the School of Biological and Marine Sciences is primed to enable students to achieve their ambitions by linking research to real world problems. Our programmes are grouped into three subject areas: inspiring change for a more sustainable future with biological sciences; protecting the diversity of marine life on our planet with marine biology; and exploring, understanding and protecting our ocean systems with marine science. Students are taught by experts in their fields, with teaching informed by world-leading research for which the University has been awarded two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Environment and Conservation, and a UK top 10 impact ranking for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal, Life Below Water in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023.

The Marine Sciences team within the School of Biological & Marine Sciences at the University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint a new Lecturer in Marine Conservation, initially on a 2 year fixed-term contract. You will have expertise within the field of marine conservation, and be a highly motivated and dynamic academic who seeks the opportunity to build a career in a University with an international reputation in marine science and marine conservation. You will be expected to develop a successful research portfolio within our highly successful Marine Conservation Research Group (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/research/marine-conservation-research-group ). The appointment will complement and build on our existing research and teaching strengths. Our Marine Science team has expertise in a diverse range of marine science and conservation topics including; ecosystem monitoring and indicators, artificial light pollution, marine mammal conservation, marine community ecology and marine policy, regulation and management. The team is embedded within the School of  Biological and Marine Sciences (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/schools/school-of-biological-and-marine-sciences ) with a wide range of research expertise and degree programme delivery.

The teaching associated with this role is closely aligned to our BSc in Ocean Science and Marine Conservation and MSc in Marine Conservation. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching across the Marine Sciences Subject Area (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/schools/school-of-biological-and-marine-sciences/marine-science )

We are seeking applicants with good quantitative skills and research active in any of the following areas;

• Applied marine conservation ecology
• Spatial management and MPAs
• Fisheries ecology and management
• Marine conservation policy and practice
• Society and sustainability in marine environments

We are interested in candidates with experience from all geographic regions including tropical and polar environments in particular.

You will have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, supported by experience at postdoctoral or equivalent level, and a proven research track record demonstrated through high calibre outputs of a quality likely to contribute to our future UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission. The successful candidate may be required to obtain an ATAS Certificate prior to this research being undertaken.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis for 2 years due to funding.
