The UCL Arts and Sciences (UASc) department at University College London (UCL) is the home for the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) which is the UK's leading interdisciplinary degree, covering arts, social sciences and sciences degree. BASc combines the breadth of interdisciplinary study across the arts and sciences with the opportunity to specialise in one or two key subject areas and is structured around a compulsory Core and 4 Pathways. The department also offers a MASc in Creative Health, a BA in Creative Arts and Humanities and has a doctoral programme in Interdisciplinary Societies, Arts and Sciences.
We are seeking a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Social Economics who can offer an unconventional or non-mainstream approach to economics which highly values interdisciplinarity, the role of social forces and qualitative evidence and thinking, while also paying attention to quantitative measures where appropriate. Examples of some areas that would be relevant are (we do not expect the postholder to have all the following but offer them as an indication of the kinds of areas of unconventional social economics we are interested in): pluralist approaches to economics, economic systems, and models; focusing on issues of inequality, environmental degradation, and social justice, including challenging neoliberal subjectivities and assumptions; exploring regenerative and redistributive models; analysis of the following: knowledge economy, digital economy, information economy and cultural and creative industries and economies; addressing alternative economic models, sustainability,! and soci al impact that emphasise interdisciplinary perspectives and critical thinking. The postholder will organise and convene the final year compulsory module BASC0023 The Knowledge Economy: Consultancy Project and will develop a new module entitled 'Forms of Capitalism'. The postholder will contribute excellent research in interdisciplinary social economics or an area of interdisciplinary social economics as outlined above. The area of research should be interdisciplinary and related to a discipline or disciplines relevant to interdisciplinary social economics, excluding econometrics. The postholder will be primarily associated with the Societies pathway on the BASc Arts and Sciences programmes which includes! acting as a Personal Tutor for students majoring in that pathway and providing guidance on how they can curate an individualised and coherent degree.
The postholder will be educated to Doctoral level in any interdisciplinary area relevant to interdisciplinary social economics (as outlined above), and have proven experience in research in interdisciplinary social economics. Previous experience of teaching, research and engagement in a university department is essential, as is knowledge of the connection between scholarship, policy and practice. In addition, the postholder will have the ability to share in the organisation and management of research programmes in interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinary social economics. A proven ability to mentor students, including advising on module choices, and excellent communication skills are also essential.
