Based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the School of Biological and Marine Sciences is primed to enable students to achieve their ambitions by linking research to real world problems. Our programmes are grouped into three subject areas: inspiring change for a more sustainable future with biological sciences; protecting the diversity of marine life on our planet with marine biology; and exploring, understanding and protecting our ocean systems with marine science. Students are taught by experts in their fields, with teaching informed by world-leading research for which the University has been awarded two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Environment and Conservation, and a UK top 10 impact ranking for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal, Life Below Water in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023.

The Marine Sciences team within the School of Biological & Marine Sciences at the University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint a new Lecturer to take a major role in delivering and furthering our hydrography teaching and research. Plymouth has a long history of teaching in hydrography and the subject is a key area of growth within the University. Expertise of particular interest would include applications of hydrography in the coastal environment, with a focus on data collection (including experience with autonomous platforms) to further understanding of coastal processes, or studies of coastal and/or inner-shelf marine geoscience which shed light on coastal evolution and sediment transport processes.

You will either be a highly motivated and dynamic academic, with experience in marine survey, or an experienced individual with extensive proven expertise in hydrography through commercial practice. You will be expected to make a major contribution to and further develop our MSc Hydrography programme, as well as associated undergraduate courses within the Marine Science subject area (including our BSc (Hons) Ocean Exploration and Surveying course). You will also be expected to introduce new capabilities to the globally recognised Coastal Processes Research Group (CPRG).

While this role is closely aligned to our BSc programmes in Ocean Exploration and Surveying and Ocean Science, and the postgraduate programmes, MSc Hydrography  and MSc Applied Marine Science, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching across the Marine Sciences Subject Group https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/schools/school-of-biological-and-marine-sciences/marine-science

You will have a doctoral degree, equivalent international qualification or commensurate level of recognition/national profile in a relevant discipline (e.g., Hydrography, Oceanography, Marine Geoscience), supported by experience at postdoctoral or industry equivalent level, and a proven track record of high calibre research/industry outputs of a quality likely to contribute to our future UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission or enterprise income. Clear evidence of successful grant applications (or industry equivalent) as a PI is desirable. It is expected that the successful candidate would be hired on a teaching only contract but a balanced pathway contract could be considered in the case of a research active candidate.

The successful candidate may be required to obtain an ATAS Certificate prior to this research being undertaken.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed-term basis for 2 years, due to business demand. This position is fully expected to become permanent following successful conclusion of a probationary period.
