The Role
Your research and teaching will complement and extend our existing strengths in human geography at Newcastle University, particularly in social geography. You will provide internationally recognised scholarship within your research field, combined with excellent undergraduate teaching. We welcome applicants whose work advances one or more of the following areas: geographies of displacement, asylum and population mobilities; the spatial constitution and expression of social inequalities and disadvantage at multiple scales; postcolonial and decolonial approaches in the study of social life and its spaces; critical approaches to the geographies of global inequalities and development; geographies of justice; methodological innovations in the investigation of social life and space.

Geography is part of the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, which has Athena SWAN bronze accreditation. We welcome applicants who share our values of inclusion and integrity.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct and publish internationally recognised research within human geography, focusing on social geography.
  • Contribute to our future submissions within the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).
  • Apply for external research funding, including developing collaborative applications with colleagues in Geography and/or elsewhere in the School, Faculty or University.
  • Engage with potential (non-academic) beneficiaries of your research.
  • Be an active member of our research clusters.
  • Contribute to teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, connecting in particular to our themes around social geography (broadly defined).
  • Develop and extend our undergraduate teaching within human and our broader geography programmes.
  • Engage with postgraduate research student supervision should opportunities arise.
  • Contribute to the administration of Geography teaching programmes and/or the effective management of other activities in Geography and the School.
  • Provide academic guidance and pastoral care to personal tutees.
  • Act in a collegial manner, making a positive contribution to maintaining and enhancing a collaborative and inclusive environment that values and supports excellent research, teaching and impact.
  • Take responsibility for your professional and career development in a collaborative environment and with the support and encouragement of your colleagues and mentors.

Qualifications

  • Good first degree and PhD in Human Geography or a related field.
