Lectureship in English Language and Linguistics (1 year fixed-term)
School of English, Communication and Philosophy

The School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Grade 6, Teaching & Scholarship) to contribute to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English Language and Linguistics.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at UG and MA levels (primarily introductory lectures at Year one, and Sociolinguistics at Year two and MA levels), whilst also contributing to UG and MA dissertation supervisions and personal tutee workloads.  Bringing an engaging and innovative approach to module delivery and assessment, a commitment to delivering excellent student experience and contributing to the enhancement of distinctive provision at Cardiff.

The post holder will engage effectively with academic, professional and public institutions and groups to raise awareness of the School’s profile, cultivate strategic alliances and enhance the School’s ambition to be a creative and inclusive community renowned for its impact on policy, practice and public life.

This is a full-time post, fixed term from 1st September 2023 to 31st August 2024.   

Salary: £35,333 - £42,155 per annum (Grade 6).  New appointments are usually made at the bottom of the salary scale

Job Description

Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes in English Language and Linguistics within the undergraduate and post graduate provision within the School.  To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in, teaching and to inspire others to do the same

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching

  • Contribute to introductory modules in language and linguistics as part of a module team.
  • Convene and deliver undergraduate modules and a postgraduate module related to Sociolinguistics
  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students
  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust
Scholarship
  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship 
  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
  • Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work
Other
  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer
  • Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in sociolinguistics or related field.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements in sociolinguistics.
  • Ability to deliver and continuously develop modules across the School’s teaching programmes.
  • Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
  • Other
  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work
  • Desirable Criteria
  • Proven ability to work without close supervision
  •  Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
  • A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
