The School of Arts & Creative Industries is a forward looking, dynamic school preparing its students for employability and responsible citizenship fit for the demands of the 21st Century.

Situated in the heart of Scotland’s festival city, Edinburgh, SACI is made up of three subject areas – Media and Humanities; Screen & Performing Arts; and Art, Design and Photography. The School is home to just over 1800 students and about 96 permanent staff plus a range of industry experts and specialist staff employed on a more casual basis.

Media and Humanities

Media and Humanities is a vibrant and diverse subject area with a suite of UG and PG courses that range from English and Creative Writing to Mass Communications, Publishing and Journalism.  The latest league tables demonstrate how our programmes lead the field in their areas.  We’re a hub for interdisciplinary learning and research around culture and storytelling.  We are home to the award-winning studio radio station – Radio ENRG – and our publishing operation, Merchiston Press. We’ve developed strong partnerships with media organisations and have a great track-record in student employability and satisfaction.

We are now seeking to appoint a Lecturer in English.

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, open-minded individual to join our growing English Suite of programmes. Edinburgh Napier is The Times and The Sunday Times top modern university in Scotland. We are number 1 for English out of all UK modern universities (THE TIMES AND SUNDAY TIMES GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE 2021), and all members of the English team are research active.

Founded in 2007, the undergraduate programme has consistently strong NSS ratings. Our programmes encourage an outward-looking approach in teaching, learning and research. Members of the team have worked with a range of non-academic partners, from Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature and Edinburgh International Book Festival to Surgeons’ Hall Museums and the Scottish Prison Service.

As a lecturer in English, you will:

• Contribute to the delivery of our successful English Suite, including BA (Hons) English, BA (Hons) English & Film, and BA (Hons) Acting & English.Be expected to teach flexibly across the curriculum (including both literary and screen studies) and historical periods, with particular focus on decolonising English studies.
• Act as a Personal Development Tutor for students and supervise research students and dissertations at undergraduate level as appropriate.
• Be given research time allocation in your workload.
• Be encouraged to join one of our new research centres in SACI and to collaborate in research activity.
• Be given training and development opportunities through our Human Resources (HR) and Research, Innovation and Enterprise Office (RIE). 

Applicants must demonstrate:

Essential

• A doctoral level qualification
• A strong research profile including a track-record of REF-eligible publications commensurate with career stage.
• Significant experience in developing, designing, and delivering teaching and student-centred learning in Higher Education.
• Ability to teach across a range of genres and forms and to use a diversity of assessment methods.

Desirable 

• Research expertise or interest in decolonising approaches to screen studies and/or the literature and culture of the long eighteenth century.
• Research plan with potential for external income generation.

Benefits:

Gross Base Salary: £40,927 to £50,296 per annum (Grade 6) Pro rata
