Lecturer in Electrochemistry

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Manchester, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 01 Feb 2023

Applications are invited for the above post to undertake research, teaching and associated administrative tasks within the Department of Chemistry.  The post is broadly equivalent to the rank of “Assistant Professor” used in North America.

The successful candidate will have a strong research background in electrochemistry, and will be expected to develop a successful independent research programme in this area. Applicants with expertise in any area of electrochemistry will be considered, however, strong expertise in electrochemistry at the nanoscale/molecular level to improve understanding of fundamental electrochemical processes, as well as processes underpinning electrochemical storage/conversion devices (batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells) would be welcomed. The main criteria for appointment will be the track record and future potential of the candidate.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and strongest in the UK. The department performed well in the recent (2021) Research Excellence Framework, being rated third in the UK in terms of research power. Research in the Department is organised into six research sections, spanning the breadth of the subject within Manchester (analytical/physical; chemical biology; computational chemistry; inorganic; materials chemistry and organic). Most of the Department’s research is housed in the 7-floor Chemistry building, which is currently undergoing a multi-million investment in space reconfiguration. Some department staff are housed in adjacent research institutes, such as the Photon Science institute (PSI), the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) and the Royce Hub building. Royce possesses a dry room facility and extensive electrochemical apparatus within the group of Prof R Dryfe.

The department is one of five constituting the School of Natural Sciences, the other four departments being Mathematics, Materials, Earth & Environmental Sciences and Physics & Astronomy. Extensive collaborations exist with each of these departments. The other constituent School of the Faculty of Science & Engineering is the School of Engineering, which includes a large and vibrant Chemical Engineering Department. Both Chemical Engineering and Materials include a number of staff with interest in applied aspects of electrochemistry (fuel cells, corrosion, electrochemical aspects of nanomaterials science), therefore good opportunities exist for development of collaborations with staff in these departments, as well as within Chemistry. The Chemistry department possesses state-of-the-art analytical facilities (mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy) and hosts the EPSRC national centre for EPR spectroscopy. The Faculty has excellent materials characterisation facilities, notably in transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
