THE ROLE

Birmingham City University invites applications for Lecturer in Cyber Security to support and advance its growth in the cyber security discipline. 

The University focuses on practice-led, problem-based learning, providing access to cutting-edge facilities and real-world experience. Our lecturing staff are research active, and engaged externally, maintaining currency and strong links with industry ensuring students are given an insight into the growing area of cybersecurity to help them learn and succeed.  

In recognition of this we are looking to recruit exceptional academic staff who are at the cutting-edge of the cybersecurity discipline, believe in practice-based learning, possess exceptional communication skills, and are a team player. 

You will be expected to support teaching & learning for undergraduate/postgraduate modules, provide pastoral care to students, engage in cutting-edge research, and contribute to recruitment and outreach activities. You will develop and deliver engaging teaching and learning as a member of the cybersecurity team in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures. You will also set and mark assessments providing timely and constructive feedback to students. 

Conscious of inclusive practices, you will be expected to provide pastoral support to students assisting with their journey at BCU and equipping them with skills to meet the demands of the cyber security industry.

Further, you will explore and innovate ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback. You will be expected to engage in cutting-edge research and enterprise activities through own-initiative and collaboration with peers in academia and industry, leading to external funding and publications in reputable venues.

You will possess core cybersecurity skillset with experience of teaching at university level. You will also have a track record of publishing research articles at reputable venues and potential to develop research proposals to seek external funding. You will be passionate about supporting students through their educational journey and keen to learn and adopt inclusive practices to engage with students from diverse abilities and backgrounds.  

With core cyber security skills and knowledge, candidates with expertise in Cyber Physical Systems, Digital Forensics, Machine Learning and AI, and Future Networks are particularly encouraged to apply. Membership of a professional bodies (such as the BCS, the IET, ISACA or ISC2 ), industry-recognised certifications, and professional registration (such as CITP or CEng) is also beneficial.
