The Post

The Division of Computing Science and Mathematics at the University of Stirling is seeking to appoint a grade 7 teaching and research lecturer with expertise in computer systems and AI hardware design including FPGA design, microcontroller programming, embedded systems and computer architecture. Other desirable expertise includes Internet of Things, edge computing, sensor networks and wireless networks, and systems programming with C or C++. Applicants with experience in artificial/ spiking neural networks, computational neuroscience (predictive coding; sparse coding; continuous learning; competitive learning; neural information processing; dendritic computation; cortical feedback connections; cortical region interactions), strong algorithmic background, python/ deep learning APIs, libraries and algorithms are particularly encouraged to apply.

You must have a developing track record of excellence and you will be expected to generate high quality research outputs and grant income, working within our existing research teams. You will have a clear vision for your own research career, a strategy for achieving that vision, and a desire to collaborate with researchers at Stirling and from around the world. We will support you as you grow your research network at home and abroad. We also welcome applicants with high quality industrial networks and experience of collaborations with commercial organisations.

You will manage cohorts of students from around the world, providing support both online and face to face. You will support our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and help run other offerings such as micro-credentials and our graduate apprenticeship programme. You will help to develop teaching materials, support students using a variety of communication channels, create and mark assessments, and provide quality feedback. You will also explore and develop new ways of improving the experience for online students in terms of learning, cohort building, and delivering fair effective assessment. You will have experience of teaching a number of the key skills such as programming, cyber security, computer systems and networks, machine learning, database design, software engineering, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. You will have experience and an enthusiasm for innovative teaching practices using new technology and new patterns of delivery. Applications from candidates with industrial experience are encouraged. Description of Duties

  • Engage in individual and collaborative research, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, develop a programme of research and disseminate results through regular publication in high impact journals, books and conference proceedings
  • Identify appropriate sources of funding, prepare research proposals for funding bodies and manage grants awarded
  • Supervise research students as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Design and deliver a range of teaching and learning, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate, postgraduate including online/digital programmes where required
  • Participate in the Faculty’s international engagement activities as required e.g delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Participate in, and develop, networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the Division/Faculty/University
  • Participate in the administrative processes of the Division/Faculty/University including committee membership, quality assurance procedures and recruitment and admission of students

    The Division of Computing Science and Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS) which also encompasses the Divisions of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Psychology and the Institute of Aquaculture.     Computing Science and Mathematics (CSM)

    The research strength of CSM is underpinned by its inherent inter-disciplinary nature, which exploits synergies between Computing Science, Mathematics, Life Sciences (including Biology, Aquaculture, Environmental Science and Neuroscience), Social Science and Management. This positions us well to exploit growing funding opportunities and to develop strong student interest beyond computing, into applications in biological and biomedical systems, environmental and ecological systems, business and management, and societal issues. Research questions in CSM are investigated within the context of a broad range of real-world domains. Consequently, our research has a strong focus on stakeholder engagement, and it addresses key industrial and societal challenges in partnership with a wide network of collaborators from across industry, commerce and the public sector. Our research is led by 24 active researchers and is conducted in three complementary research groups: Data Science and Intelligent Systems, Biological Modelling, and Computational Mathematics and Optimisation, as well as a Special Interest Group on Computer Vision and Image Processing; all have the common theme of investigating complex systems in uncertain and dynamic real world environments. We deliver high quality teaching on a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and online programmes. Computing Science at Stirling is ranked 7th in the UK for teaching in the 2022 Guardian Best University guide and 8th in the UK in the 2021 NSS rankings.
