An opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer in Healthcare Communication to join the Interactive Studies Unit (ISU) in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham. The ISU is a well-established team (1993) specialising in clinical communication, professionalisation and language. We design, deliver and assess communication and professionalism across the degree programmes of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing, and contribute to the PG Physician Associate Programme. The (unique) centralisation of the service affords opportunity to deliver consistent, values-based teaching across specialities, and develop shared approaches/resources. We have strong links to medical humanities, healthcare linguistics, medical ethics and interprofessional education. The Lecturer will join a team of 5 academics and 3 professional services staff committed to graduating exemplary healthcare professionals ready to be their best (and safest) selves on first day of work. The role comprises design, management and delivery of teaching, often, but not always, in small groups applying human simulation methodology (drawing on the support of our 100+ professional role players, who act as simulated patients/relatives/colleagues). The role will include a range of opportunities in healthcare education, including assessment, and afford the postholder the chance to bring their own specialism to the programmes via live and virtual learning. Much is based on our vibrant campus, with some delivered at partner NHS Trusts. The role includes 1-1 coaching on the ICS flagship programme for students experiencing complex challenges in their professional development. The successful applicant will be joining a long-standing team of national and international reputation who contribute to the Medical Education evidence base. We are looking for an experienced healthcare teacher, with a background in interactive learning and communication, to prepare a substantive, and growing, community of healthcare undergraduates for the workplace.

BRIEF PERSON SPEC

This post will suit an individual with experience in, and passion for, developing others in a healthcare context. Experience of interpersonal communication is essential, as is an understanding of its relationship with other aspects of professional development such as character, resilience and integrity. Experience of stakeholder management is also important. The successful applicant will have excellent oral and written communication ability, and appreciate the benefits of a values based (rather than “surface skills”) approach. They will ideally be familiar with the use of human and/or hybrid simulation methodology, flexible to change, able to prioritise and to work independently, and as part of a team representing the values/objectives of the wider academic institution. Backgrounds include (but are not limited to) communication, simulation, education, psychology, ethics, medical humanities, linguistics and healthcare. They will have a track record in teaching, and a higher degree (or be in the process of a higher degree) in a related field and/or teaching accreditation. Other relevant qualification will be considered on an individual basis.
