Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
Lecturer in Civil Engineering

The appointee will be expected to contribute to teaching, curriculum development and administration within the Civil Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship Programme and to administration within the School of Science and Engineering.
  • Undertake teaching of students on the Graduate Apprenticeship Programme. This may include delivery of modules in a range of subject areas, but at an entry level (i.e. introductory level structures, soil mechanics, hydraulics, CAD, etc.)
  • Support and assess learning objectives achieved in the workplace, acting closely with the Graduate Apprentice’s employer.
  • Contribute to the development of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme at the University. · Contribute to student recruitment to the Graduate Apprenticeship.
  • Work with industry to continually develop the Graduate Apprenticeship and attract new industrial partners.
  • Undertake administrative duties.

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Person Specification:
Essential: All Grades:
  • Clear evidence of excellence in learning and teaching or in mentoring staff to professional qualifications (e.g. IEng/CEng) in the workplace.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others
  • Evidence of effective team membership
  • Ability to prioritise and balance competing demands

For applicants from an academic background:
  • Evidence or appreciation of use of innovative teaching methods
  • Clear evidence of administering, or assisting in administering, and examining modules
  • Experience of successful supervision of undergraduate and/or taught postgraduate student projects

For applicants from an industry background:
  • Experience in developing innovative solutions for civil/structural engineering projects and leading teams delivering such projects
  • Experience in mentoring junior staff towards successful completion of professional qualifications
  • Clear evidence for the potential to be effective as a teacher

Grade 8
  • Demonstrated experience of excellent teaching or mentoring leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience of use of innovative teaching or training methods.

  • Either a PhD in a relevant subject or Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStructE

  • Experience of curriculum development
  • Experience of Public Engagement with Science
