Lecturer in Civil Engineering
Cardiff School of Engineering

The appointee will join the Computational Mechanics and Engineering AI (CMAI) research Group in the Department of Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

You will deliver research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to  publication. To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same

Conducting interdisciplinary research within the School of Engineering with a specialism in smart materials, structures and digital infrastructure systems, you will also design and deliver teaching programmes for courses in Civil Engineering.

With a Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject, you will have a relevant professional qualification e.g. C. Eng (Chartered Engineer), or be working towards it, with an expectation of gaining Chartered status within 3 years. In addition, you will have an established expertise and proven portfolio of research in smart materials, structures and digital infrastructure systems and teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

This post is full time, available immediately and is open ended.

Salary: £35,333 - £42,155 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Research

  • To conduct research in smart materials, structures and/ or digital infrastructure systems related to physics and mechanics informed Engineering AIs and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students. 
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To give conference/seminar papers at a local and national level
  • To participate in School research activities.

Teaching
  • To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses in Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering and contribute to module development as part of a module team
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University
  • To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students
Other
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally  to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
1.    Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject.
2.    Have relevant professional qualification(s) e.g. C. Eng (Chartered Engineer), or be working towards them, with an expectation of gaining Chartered status within the 3 year probationary period of the appointment.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3.    An established expertise and proven portfolio of research within the areas of smart materials, structures and/ or digital infrastructure systems related to physics and mechanics informed Engineering AIs. Evidence of a track record relating to some of the following:
⦁ working in the built environment, infrastructure or construction engineering areas;
⦁ fundamental understanding of theory, algorithms, and applications relating to the new generation of                              engineering AI;
⦁ systems approach to machine learning oriented modelling, analysis and optimisation and its                                        application in smart materials, structures, and digital infrastructure systems;
⦁ large scale data driven digital engineering and informatics, including building information modelling,                              digital twins, IoTs, and their application in sustainable buildings, infrastructure and the wider built                                 environment;
⦁ knowledge engineering, large-scale statistical methodology and inference, nature-inspired computing                         and high dimensional smart decision making.
4.  Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level and ability to teach engineering design and                      computational subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the School,
5.   Knowledge of current status of research in specialist field
6.  Proven ability to publish in national journals
7.  Proven ability to be successful in competitive research funding
8.  Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the School’s teaching programmes
