About the role
We are seeking a high calibre scientist with a research profile of international standing to join the Leicester Cancer Research Centre, within the Department of Genetics and Genome Biology to conduct high quality research and teaching in the field of cancer immunology and prevention, focussing on developing agents which prevent cancer and understanding the mechanisms underlying their effects.  There is also a major emphasis on developing new biomarkers which can indicate the clinical effectiveness of these agents in trials and aid preclinical discovery. 
 
Your research will support strategic priorities in the Leicester Cancer Research Centre and wider Department. Specifically, you will help establish and develop a new area of immunoprevention research, within the Cancer Research Centre and Prevention Group.  This appointment is part of a major commitment by the University to research into cancer and will have a key role in the new Personalised Cancer Prevention and Treatment Theme within our NIHR funded Biomedical Research Centre, as well as the Leicester Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. You will also undertake teaching and administrative duties at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the College of Life Sciences, supporting modules and taught postgraduate courses in Cancer Molecular Pathology and Therapeutics and/or Clinical Sciences, depending on your expertise. The College of Life Sciences has several Doctoral training programmes so you will have access to PhD studentships and opportunity for doctoral level training input.
 
The NIHR Leicester BRC is a partnership between the University of Leicester, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Loughborough University and the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group. It has been funded £26.1 million from December 2022 to November 2027 to carry out pioneering research into medical advancements into illnesses linked to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and the consequences of inactivity will continue to push boundaries of knowledge in clinical medicine. Three new speciality areas have joined the NIHR Leicester BRC for the first time: Personalised cancer prevention and treatment, Environment – looking at how the environment impacts on long term health conditions - and Using data to better understand multiple long term health conditions and factors specific to the health of ethnic minority populations. In addition, the respiratory speciality is joined by experts in infectious diseases.   Our overall purpose is to translate scientific breakthroughs in these areas into diagnostic tests, preventions and life-saving treatments for our patients. We do this by creating a collaborative workspace that allows scientists and clinicians to share their findings and deliver research that is relevant to both patients and the professionals who treat them.
About you
We are looking for an established researcher, with a high quality publication profile in cancer immunology or more general immunology with a strong interest in cancer and potentially fundable research ideas. You will have experience of research in cancer prevention or willingness to apply your skills and expertise to this area of research. You will also have a collaborative attitude to research and willingness to work as part of a team, whilst also developing an independent research programme. You must have excellent networking skills, which you use to seek out opportunities for collaboration and citizenship, both internally and externally. 
 
You will also be an enthusiastic educator capable of inspiring interest, curiosity and drive for learning in our students. You will have a real passion for the subject matter and be motivated to provide the very best experience for our students using your expertise and skill to ensure all reach their potential.
