The School of Informatics and Digital Engineering is part of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. As a cohesive and cross-disciplinary School, we focus on real-world skills and research, via teaching that delivers industry-ready graduates, and research that brings impact. Aston’s Mathematics Department has an important role in this work, as mathematical skills are increasingly an integral part of our everyday and digital lives, via an understanding of the theories and applications that make sense of the world around us – from computer modelling and data analysis in, for example, transport networks to the stock market, and health services to climate change.

In this environment our Mathematics Department has a strong applied mathematics undergraduate degree designed with a placement year, as well as a large cohort of postgraduate MSc Data Analytics students. We are actively engaged in research which underpins and develops the work across our School, College and the rest of the University, and which makes a difference to a range of beneficiaries. We are particularly keen, therefore, to receive applications from academics who are excited by our balanced mission of excellent in both research and teaching, particularly in the areas of Fluid Mechanics, Probabilistic Machine Learning, Mathematics with AI, Data Science and Complex Systems.

An ability to contribute to the teaching and research of applied Mathematics is essential. You will have a track record of, or the potential for, excellent teaching (appropriate to career stage), and a clearly developed research plan for the future, and good collaborations. You must also be committed to excellent teaching and outstanding student support. A PhD in a subject allied to Mathematics is essential, as is relevant professional and/or academic experience. If you have experience of leading postgraduate programmes that would be an advantage.

Shortlisted candidates will need to submit a virtual teaching session of their choice, attend a panel interview and deliver a presentation to the Department as part of the selection process.
