Job description

The post provides an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Psychological Medicine.

Education & Teaching Component

The role requires a skilled educator to teach postgraduate students on topics related to affective disorders and research methodology, enhance the education and experiences of our postgraduate students, delivering appealing, up-to-date teaching and contributing to the development of our curricula, teaching and assessment methods.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing design of the MSc Affective Disorders programme, and additional affective disorders modules on other courses, in conjunction with the Programme Leader, e.g., in response to student feedback.

It is anticipated that teaching, administration, delivery, assessment, and enhancement of taught modules will require 50% of the postholder’s time.

Research Component

The postholder will define and lead research securing funding to develop a highly respected, international research programme in an area relevant to affective disorders. This will include productive collaborative links in academia and/or industry.

The successful candidate will also contribute to determining research direction in the area of Psychological Medicine to ensure King's College London is at the forefront of the field and

supervise, on a day-to-day basis, postgraduate students and/or post-doctoral staff carrying out research, and the technical staff assisting with the research.

The post will be available to start from 1st August 2024 and will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract until 30th September 2026.

The selection process will include a panel interview and a presentation.


Key responsibilities

Education  

  • Lecturing for the MSc Affective Disorders and other post-graduate courses
  • Contribute to the planning, teaching and assessment of modules across courses, on the topics of affective disorders and research methodology. 
  • Participate in formative and summative assessments including marking and moderation of assignments and module evaluation.
  • Develop and supervise student research projects.
  • Act as personal tutor and support students in accordance with Departmental, Faculty and College practice and guidelines.
  • Promote teaching excellence as consistent with the College and Faculty educational policy and strategy.
  • Deliver on campus and online teaching, learning and assessment using KCL virtual learning environment.

Research

  • Develop and sustain a nationally/internationally recognised research program. 
  • Continue a record of publication in high impact peer-reviewed journals. 
  • Provide research leadership within their research field, attracting significant independent grant funding.  
  • Provide supervision to research staff and (post)graduate students. 
  • Develop the research activities of the department by determining the research direction for self and others, leading to the planning and co-ordination of a broad research activity or programme. 
  • Build and uphold national/international collaborations, including with universities, expert centres, consortia and industry organisations. 
  • Engage in external academic activities in accordance with the department’s research strategy which will enhance its international research profile.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       First Degree and/or Masters in relevant subject  

2.       PhD in a subject related to affective disorders  

3.       Expertise in mood disorders and multiple disciplines associated with affective neuroscience  

4.       Ability to conduct high quality research evidenced, for example, by high-quality publications, presentation of research in international fora, completion of clinical studies (with a prominent role, e.g., evidenced through first author publications)   

5.       Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, alongside good organisational and administrative skills  

6.       Experience obtaining funding for relevant research studies e.g., from funding councils or industry links 

7.       Evidence of developing international collaborations  

8.       Experience of learning & development software and platforms  

9.       Evidence of excellent teaching potential in a highly international university environment 

Desirable criteria

1.       Higher Education accreditation/qualification (e.g. HEA Fellowship or PGCAPHE)  

2.       Potential to attract independent, external research funds 

3.       A developing profile of high-quality academic publication in recognised outlets
