The Centre for Academic Writing (CAW) at Coventry University is an innovative teaching and research centre whose mission is to enable students to become confident writers, to support academics in teaching writing, and to support colleagues in writing for research dissemination and publication. The Centre has an internal, national, and international reputation for leading in the area of ‘whole-university’ writing support underpinned by research and expertise in Academic Writing pedagogy. 

We seek to hire a Lecturer in Academic Writing to join CAW’s existing team of Lecturers on a full-time permanent basis. Based in CAW, the Lecturer in Academic Writing role is central to conceptualising, planning, and delivering writing development for undergraduates, postgraduates, academics, researchers, and professional services staff, and for working strategically on writing development with students and staff across the Coventry University Group.

Supported by CAW’s Lecturing Team and the Co-ordinator of Academic Writing Tutors, the post-holder will focus on the following key areas:

  • Co-ordinate and contribute to the development of Academic Writing resources for students and staff, including building CAW's online offer.
  • Further develop and co-ordinate CAW’s ‘Writing in the Disciplines’ (WiD)/‘Writing Across the Curriculum’ (WAC) provision.
  • Train and oversee CAW’s Academic Writing Student Mentors in CAW’s new ‘Study Skills for Academic Writing’ Peer Mentoring scheme.
  • Contribute to the teaching, module leadership and redeveloping of CAW’s Add+vantage teaching offer for undergraduate students.

The Lecturer in Academic Writing role also includes:

  • Offering writing support to research-active staff and PGR students, such as Scholarly Writing Retreats, workshops, and consultations.
  • Teaching on CAW’s MA/PGDip ‘Academic Writing Development and Research’/ PGCert ‘Academic Writing Development’.
  • Assisting in designing methods for measuring the impact of writing support and carrying out data collection on CAW’s services.
  • Research and Administrative work associated with the Lecturer role.

It is essential that you have a PhD in Academic Writing/Writing Studies, Education, Linguistics, EAP, or a related subject. PhD holders in STEM-related disciplines with experience of teaching and/or researching writing in STEM subjects will also be considered. We seek a Writing Developer with expertise in Academic Writing Research and Linguistics, Educational research, or Social Science research and teaching, and/or with knowledge and experience of scientific writing and quantitative research methodologies.

It is essential that proficiency in ICT and its application to teaching, learning, and applied research can be clearly demonstrated.

Please note: Successful applicants are normally appointed on the first point of the Grade 7 pay scale (7.30).
