An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer (Teaching & Research) in Human-Centred Computing (HCC) to join Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science and Informatics.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to finding creative solutions and have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to undertake world-class research relevant to the School’s Human-Centred Computing research group. We are looking for candidates with a strong research background in one or more of the following areas: Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Robot Interaction, Mobile & Social computing, Urban Informatics, Interaction Design, Games, Tangible and Embodied Interaction, Shape-Changing Interfaces, Emerging and Immersive Technologies and/or Information Visualisation. Outstanding applicants in other HCC areas will also be considered.

You will possess or be near completion of a PhD in an area related to Computer Science or have relevant industrial experience. The School of Computer Science & Informatics includes the National Software Academy (NSA), which is based in Newport and delivers industry-focused undergraduate and postgraduate Software Engineering programmes that include modules on software development skills, mobile development, security, performance, DevOps and emerging technologies. Teaching in the School covers two sites, with Software Engineering delivered at the NSA in Newport, and all other programmes delivered at our Cardiff site. The appointment will be made dependent on relevant qualifications and experience, within the Grade 6 and 7 scales:

Salary:
£33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6) or
£42,792 - £49,553 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

Main Function

To deliver high-quality and research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same.

A lecturer position in the UK is similar to an assistant professorship in the North-American system.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • To conduct research within the School’s Human-Centred Computing research group, contributing to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including attracting funding, publishing in academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.

Grade 7: contribute to internationally recognised research performance

  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals as well as knowledge transfer activities.

Grade 7: independently develop research objectives, acting as PI as required

  • To give conference/seminar papers at a local and national level.

Grade 7: present at international level

  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To network and contribute to the promotion of the School and the University
Teaching
  • To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team.

Grade 7: independently contribute to module and programme development and lead modules

  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking papers and providing constructive feedback to students) and participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students at Cardiff University.
  • To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of Postgraduate Research students (PGRs).

Grade 7: Act as a PGR progress review panel member as required

  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students.
  • To contribute to the development of a summer school programme and enhancement of the taught postgraduate student experience.
Other – all grades
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue
  • opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level (awarded or near to completion).
  • Grade 7: Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • An established expertise and proven portfolio of research relevant to Human Centred Computing.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Grade 7: significant experience

  • Knowledge of current status of research in Human Centred Computing.
  • Grade 7: growing national reputation within specialist field

  • Proven ability to publish in peer-reviewed outlets of international standing and reputation, at a volume appropriate to career stage.
  • Grade 7: substantial record of publications in peer-reviewed outlets of high international standing and reputation

  • Ability to develop an independent research programme and obtain competitive research funding.
  • Grade 7: strong portfolio of research grants

  • Ability to contribute to the delivery and continued development of modules across the Schools teaching programmes.
