Job Purpose

Glasgow College UESTC recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.  In UESTC’s home city, Chengdu, we educate over 2,000 undergraduate engineers; we have also established a second college on Hainan island in the south of China, which we expect will grow to a similar size over the next five years.  The language of teaching and assessment is English and students receive degrees from both the University of Glasgow and UESTC.

We are looking for an experienced individual to help us maintain the highest standards of English language education in Chengdu and Hainan.  You will help us on our journey of continuous improvement and ensure that our English language curricula and pedagogy are innovative and impactful. You will be based at Glasgow University, with frequent visits to our Chengdu and Hainan campuses. You will work flexibly across all three locations (and others, as necessary) to fulfil this role.

You will be responsible for a variety of teaching, training and administrative tasks associated with our English language provision and will also engage in related educational scholarship activities. The role involves the maintenance and development of ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purposes) courses, course materials and assessment resources, in the field of electrical, electronic and communications engineering.  It also involves working directly with students and working on teaching, assessment and professional development activities with the EAP teaching staff based in China.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.       Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities for students of Glasgow College.

2.       Carry out course administration within required timescales, ensuring: (a) effective communication of information as it relates to assessment requirements and criteria and (b) timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

3.       Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

4.       Design and deliver training and development to the English language teaching teams based in China and contribute to assessment standardisation activities.

5.       Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment.  This may involve blended and/or online provision.

6.       Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitate learning face to face, in a range of settings, such as tutorials, lectures, problem- based learning, promoting student participation and the achievement of learning outcomes.

7.       Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant, enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own, and potentially others’, teaching practices. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching, scholarship and/or professional practice in your disciplinary area.

8.       Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

9.       Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange. Participate in overseas activities associated with student recruitment [e.g. open days], orientation and induction.

10.    Engage in continuing professional development and pursue appropriate scholarship activities relating to the teaching and assessment of English language.

11.    Maintain an excellent working relationship with colleagues at The University of Glasgow and UESTC in the spirit of our longstanding partnership and commitment to the best possible student experience.

12.    Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the FIFO Leadership Team.

13.    Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or Masters in TESOL or cognate (e.g. English Language Teaching, Applied Linguistics) plus entry level teaching certificate (e.g. CELTA), or first degree plus postgraduate diploma (e.g. Cambridge ESOL DELTA, Trinity College), and teaching experience or equivalent professional experience in an English language teaching and assessment related area.

Desirable:

B1 Working towards or successful completion of the BALEAP TEAP Scheme Fellowship award.

B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

B2 Teaching English for Academic Purposes (TEAP) qualification.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the subject, and experience in the teaching methods and techniques, to be able to engage the interest of students and develop teaching practices.

C2 Professional knowledge of EAP teaching, assessment and course development methodologies, particularly in STEM/technical subjects.

C3 Ability to create accessible teaching materials of a specialist/technical nature for both students and other teaching staff.

C4 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.

C5 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

C6 Knowledge of cultural differences between learners of various nationalities and the impact of such differences on the classroom environment and teaching styles.

C7 Ability to handle sensitive matters with tact and diplomacy.

Experience 

Essential:

E1 Experience of designing and delivering TESOL/EAP related professional development activities for teaching and assessment to support the career development of colleagues.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended.
