Lecturer in Quantitative Criminology (E&R)

This full time, permanent post is available in HASS. There is flexibility in relation to the start date (i.e. between January and July 2023), depending on candidate availability.

The role

You will contribute to extending the research profile of Criminology and the Q-Step Centre at the University of Exeter. The successful candidate will have a creative and ambitious research agenda and will also contribute to quantitative methods teaching in Crime and Data Science.

We are looking to develop a BSc Crime and Data Science programme that will approach the study of crime using interdisciplinary methods and an international framework. Applications from candidates with skills that would complement this endeavour with specialisms in any area of Criminology are welcome. Candidates with interests in computational social science and social data studies are strongly encouraged to apply. 

About you

You will have:

• A PhD or equivalent in Criminology, Sociology, data science, or a related field and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research
• A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrable potential to attract such funding.
• Quantitative/computational methods experience
• An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
• Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes
• Enthusiasm for teaching quantitative methods to undergraduate and postgraduate students
• Strong connections and funded projects with business and community partners
• Involvement in projects which develop impact.

Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology

Criminology at Exeter is part of a diverse, collegial, and pluralistic department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology and the Exeter Q-Step Centre. The last two national research assessment exercises (REF2014 and RAE2008) have placed us firmly in the top five UK departments. You will join an interdisciplinary team of quantitative researchers at the Exeter Q-Step Centre.  Our mission at the Centre is to advance social science research using quantitative methods. We also aim to provide social science, including criminology, courses with career-enhancing training in quantitative research and computational methods. The Q-step centre is currently comprised of 8 academic staff (across Criminology, Political Science, and Sociology), 3 post-doctoral researchers, and 8 PhD researchers.
