Department

The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies was one of the foundational departments at the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary Department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other. Our drama academics are professional theatre practitioners, working in the theatre world as writers, directors, actors and theatre-makers, as well as being researchers of theatre history. Students perform and produce work in our state-of-the-art Lakeside Theatre, and develop a wide range of creative, critical and practical skills that open doors to a future in the theatre, cultural industries or a wide range of other graduate careers.

Duties of the Role

The post holder will contribute to teaching in Drama and Literature, supervise modules in these areas and assess practical Theatre projects.

Skills and qualifications required

The post-holder will have specialist expertise in World Literature and World Theatre, with a relevant doctoral degree or equivalent professional practice and an ability to teach key texts in these areas. Additionally, they should have experience and knowledge of the theatre industry and/or Theatre practice-as-research, with an understanding of the requirements for assessing practical elements of Theatre modules. Specialist expertise in Translation Studies is also desirable. The successful candidate will bring substantial experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways. They will have a clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within their subject/disciplinary areas, be committed to the ongoing and effective evaluation of their teaching, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

The successful candidate will be appointed as Lecturer. This is a fixed-term for 6 months from 1 December 2022 until 31 May 2023 to cover staff absence.
