The Role and the Department

Dynamic and vibrant, Durham University Business School is one of Durham University’s four Faculties and is comprised of four research-intensive departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Management and Marketing.  Known for its global reputation, its impact on policy and practice and its strong focus on ethics, responsibility and sustainability, the School aims to be a leading European business school with a strong global presence by 2027.

The School currently has 180 academic and teaching staff, with plans and resource commitments to grow to 230 by 2027.  The School has a high-quality portfolio of programmes at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level, across all subject areas.  The school’s student population is around 4000, across undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, attracting a talented and diverse student intake (with over 130 nationalities).

This is a new role to support the development and delivery of Executive Education programmes for external companies, including those linked to the Senior Leader Apprenticeship and Postgraduate Certificate in Senior Leadership Development.

The Learning and Teaching Co-ordinator role will involve liaison with client companies, course participants, regulatory bodies and university academic and professional services colleagues.   This will include the efficient processing and reporting of data to the Digital Apprenticeship Service, in compliance with ESFA standard policies and funding regulations.   It will also include liaison with course participants and the independent End Point Assessment organisation (e.g. Chartered Management Institute).

The post holder is responsible for the provision of a professional, efficient administrative service, supporting a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment activities from the point of student enrolment through to graduation. Supporting networks, committees and meetings, to prepare, record and distribute documents and communications, including minutes, if required. They will work flexibly to ensure the team functions effectively in meeting priorities, working in accordance with University and Departmental policies and procedures.

The post holder will provide support for course participants, including resolving queries and providing information on academic and welfare related issues, making referrals to other staff, teams and services where appropriate, escalating more specialist and complex queries or issues, as required.

The Learning & Teaching Coordinator will work independently, taking day to day decisions and using their experience and initiative to decide on appropriate courses of action and resolve complex problems. They will possess excellent organisational and time management skills, display initiative and flexibility, and demonstrate a commitment to customer service excellence.

Essential Criteria   

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.   
  • Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system, project planning. 
  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).    
  • Relevant administrative experience in a busy office environment.    
  • Demonstrable ability to proactively work with team members to ensure the delivery of high quality services.   
  • Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.   
  • Experience of working on the front line with service delivery, and the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.  
  • Ability to solve problems as part of a team and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.   
  • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.

    Typical Role Requirements

    Service Delivery

    • Resolve queries and requests for information and advice, and act as a key contact in relation to student, organisation or programme issues, signposting to other staff or departments where appropriate and escalate more specialist and complex queries or issues to more experienced team members. 
    • Respond to stakeholder needs to deliver and shape an excellent stakeholder experience. 
    • Deliver support services to ensure the effective and efficient running of business processes and systems, ensuring students receive appropriate academic support and guidance.
