It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where the successful candidate can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs. We’d expect this to be a minimum of one day per week.

The role

This post is for a lead Software Engineer reporting to the Senior Manager of the STEM Technical Services, Software Innovation Engineering Service (SIES) team. 

The SIES team develop software for a range of STEM innovation and research needs, using a variety of technologies and programming languages, focusing on cutting edge and innovative design.  

The post holder’s primary function will be to support and maintain the Open Computing Lab (OCL) software architecture, as well as supporting the Module teams who currently use it or wish to start using it. The OCL is a software stack that provides STEM students with bespoke, per module, virtual computing environments (VCE). In addition, the post holder would be required to support software engineering innovation needs in STEM as part of the team, taking an active lead on software projects they have been given responsibility for, such as the OCL, by the team manager. 

Skills and experience

  • Degree level education in an IT subject or equivalent experience (5 years or more).  
  • Experience of planning, coding, testing, and delivering full stack software projects. 
  • Experience with SQL, Linux, Kubernetes and Python.
