About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the University of Oxford as an Apprentice Laboratory Manager in the Biology department. This role incorporates a two-year training programme that will cover all aspects of the role giving you an industry-recognised qualification for a real career foundation in this sector.

You will work as an Apprentice Laboratory Support Technician. As part of your training, you will be required to complete a two-year level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship course, leading to either a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science or a Level 4 HNC depending on your previous academic attainment. This will be in the form of a day-release (1 day per week, typically adding up to 43 days per year) with the University’s training provider, CSR Scientific Training.

About the apprenticeship

As part of this role, you will undertake an Apprenticeship with CSR Scientific Training. where you will complete a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship course.

For this apprenticeship, you will work at the Department of Biology, in Oxford. As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend in-house training, as well as day-release or other distance learning methods delivered by CSR Scientific Training. There will be 2 weeks (1 in year 1 and 1 in year 2) where you will be required to travel to Sutton Coldfield for practical elements of the course. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the department.

In total, it will take 2 years to complete all elements of the apprenticeship, with support from the Department, University, and College throughout.

About you

You will be passionate about starting your career in animal care and excited about the opportunity of becoming an apprentice at the University of Oxford. You may be starting your career or you may be looking for a career change.

To complete the Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE Maths and English. If you did not achieve these grades, do not let that put you off from applying as you can study Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship giving you the equivalent qualifications needed.
To help check that you have the potential to achieve these, CSR Scientific Training will ask you to complete a short initial assessment during the application process. There are also government residency requirements for Apprenticeship funding which the Training Provider will be able to advise on.
