Laboratory Manager [Temporary Cover]

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is seeking to appoint an experienced Laboratory Manager to play a leading role in supervising the delivery of research support provided by the Unit's BioRepository team.

The BioRepository team provides specialist support for short-term storage, processing and rearraying of clinical samples and delivers high-through put analysis pipelines focused around DNA applications and the measurement of clinical research biomarkers. The state-of-the-art facility is scaled for working with thousands of clinical samples by combining advanced automated liquid handling and ultra-low temperature storage technologies, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and analytical equipment to deliver biomarker and genetic research using standard operating procedures. The post-holder will be responsible for the operation of the laboratories including building infrastructure and equipment, and the coordination of the teams' workload and project schedule to meet customer requirements, agreed budgets and timelines. They will communicate with scientific staff requiring relevant technical support for project/study designs, and will be the technical expert for the facility, leading the implementation of protocols and preparing project reports for different study teams.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine and is situated within the Institute of Metabolic Science on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Its mission is to study the genetic, developmental and environmental factors that cause obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and develop strategies for their prevention. The Unit benefits from a number of large-scale, cross programme epidemiological studies with detailed datasets which support a wide range of research from genetics to public health. Highly experienced information teams and other specialist teams support the scientists in the delivery of their research aims.

You will hold a degree level (or equivalent) in biological or scientific discipline, and bring a proven expertise in the management of a laboratory dealing with high-throughput clinical sample storage and processing for DNA and biomarkers applications. You will have excellent organisational and communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders, customers, and team members. Programming skill for automated liquid handling platforms is desirable. Occasional weekend work might be required.

Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term for 12 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.  There is a possibility the role could be extended past one year.
