Queen Mary is one of London and the UK’s leading research-focused universities. With over 20,000 students, it is among the largest of the colleges of the University of London. Queen Mary’s 4,000 staff teach and research across a wide range of subjects in Science and Engineering, the Humanities, Social Sciences and Laws, and Medicine and Dentistry.
About the role
The school of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a 36 months KTP Research Associate, in collaboration with Larkfleet, and under the academic supervision of Dr J. Rafael Castrejon-Pita and Prof James Busfield. The aim of the project is to design and integrate a low-cost absorption chiller into existing solar thermal collectors.
You will gain first-hand experience of working with a strong research group at QMUL and, at the same time, an established, innovative and profitable Company, Larkfleet, located on Bourne. This KTP project offers a unique opportunity to address a clear commercial challenge in parallel with many fundamental academic challenges. Among these: the instrumentation to control of steam flow and temperature at the cooling unit while maintaining the operation of a solar collector. The KTP offers an opportunity to perform research all the way to commercial and societal impact.
Applicants should have a technical background and experience is required, equivalent to that of an MSc or PhD in an engineering discipline. Experience in design and structural analysis is desired. Preference would be given to those with experience in solar thermal collectors. Further to this, it is expected that the assistant has experience with several computational methods, such as Matlab, Abaqus and SOLIDWORKS. Importantly, the candidate must have a strong interest in developing rapid and conventional prototypes. Further information can be found on the Job Profile.
The post is full-time for fixed term for 36 months. This is a fully funded KTP project, the Assistant will be expected to start as soon as possible. The starting salary for the post is £31,054 inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits also include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
The KTP Associate will work extended periods of time at both QMUL (London) and Larkfleet Limited (Bourne, South Lincolnshire).
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
Informal enquires may be addressed to Dr J. Rafael Castrejon-Pita firstname.lastname@example.org
