This is a fantastic opportunity for three current UWE Bristol students to get real-world, hands-on experience of working in a large and complex IT Service department. We have a large and diverse IT team of over 170 professionals involved in the development and maintenance of around 700 different applications and systems supporting both our student and staff communities.

 Our internship programme offers the chance to work directly in varied and multiple areas of our department. You’ll be given responsibility and real work from the outset. We will also help you to develop workplace-ready soft skills and give you the opportunity to use industry standard professional development tools so you are in the best position possible once you graduate.

At the end of your time with us, you’ll have a great understanding of the possibilities for careers in IT and you’ll have the satisfaction of having worked on real challenges that improve the IT experience for everyone at the University.

 In academic year 2024-25, we have 3 positions available in the 2 pathway areas outlined below.  

 Please note: Some of the descriptions refer to first and second parts of the placement – it is anticipated that the first part of the internship will last approx. 13 weeks and the second part the remainder of the time, although this may be subject to change depending on operational workload within particular teams. 

On your application, please indicate a first and second preference from the following list of available pathways:

  • IT Operations (Platforms): As part of the Platforms team, you will get hands-on experience and learn about the intricacies involved in managing the University's IT systems, both on-premise and in the Azure Cloud. You'll have the opportunity to work in a dynamic Agile working environment, joining scrum/sprint activities, and managing work using the Azure DevOps Board planning tool. If you're tech-savvy, you can dive into specific areas like Linux/Microsoft technologies such as Azure Cloud, Docker containers, Kubernetes orchestration including AKS, GitLab/GitHub, and other automation tools. If you're into programming or have skills/interest in PowerShell, bash, or python, you'll love the automation-focused aspect of this opportunity, where you will create and improve tools and processes. There are plenty of exciting projects and new initiatives for you to join in, tailored to your interests and areas of development. You'll collaborate with all areas of IT Services, academic teaching staff and support services. If you're motivated and analytical, we'll train you on the job, mentor you, and provide access to the latest online courses to level up your practical and applied IT skills and give your future career a superb kickstart. 
  • IT Services Test Team: With an interest in testing, you will spend the year with IT Services Testing Team gaining experience in how testing fits into the Software Development Lifecycle.  Learn about Development and Testing processes and best practice.  You are likely to be involved in manual and automation testing, using Smartbear Test complete, ReadyAPI as well as using qTest Manager, Test Management Tool.  There will be an opportunity to obtain the ISTQB Foundation in Software Testing certification.  There are opportunities to develop automated tests using Smartbear Test Complete and Smartbear ReadyAPI.  You will have an opportunity to be assigned to a Delivery team following Agile methodologies and work in a scrum team.

This placement is scheduled to start this summer (September 2024) and will last for 12 months.

    This is a full-time, fixed-term post until August 2025, working 37 hours per week.
