Multidisciplinary approaches to study the molecular mechanism of membrane proteins from pathogenic bacteria, providing understanding to help in the fight against anti-microbial resistance.

The UK Catalysis hub, which focuses on cutting edge multidisciplinary catalytic science including homogeneous, heterogeneous, bio, and engineering catalysis. Fundamental research into catalytic processes and development of new catalysis, will support the capture of CO2, new pharmaceutical processes, water purification, new materials to reduce energy consumption and many other impacts.

The Research Complex is a UKRI and Diamond Light Source (DLS) funded joint initiative, and is run by The Medical Research Council (MRC) on behalf of the stakeholders.

Job Description  

Overall purpose: 

This role is part of the User Office and Facilities Team who provide support to users to enable and deliver the internationally competitive science being undertaken at the Research Complex at Harwell (RCaH). It provides strategic and underpinning IT support, ensuring a comprehensive level of IT service provision for our laboratories, working with partners across UKRI to understand and deliver IT capability for the needs of our research. It is one of two IT Manager roles, this one will focus on user access and IT utilities, the other role focusses on networking and IT security.

The role holder will work effectively across the User Office and Facilities Team, working closely with the Scientific Support Team (SST) and leading engagement with partners across campus to support the Research Complex scientists to deliver research of the highest quality.

The role will work with the IT Security and networking manager, supporting the Associate Director (Operations) in the continuous innovation and improvement of IT support for the science being delivered at the Research Complex. As with all members of the core team, they will proactively help implement and maintain a good Health and Safety (H&S) culture at RCaH.

Main duties / key responsibilities:

Job Purpose

In addition to the overall purpose, outlined above, this role focuses on the delivery of day-to-day IT support, working with partners across RCaH and the Campus to understand and deliver IT support for the needs of our research.   

Duties and Responsibilities

• Providing assistance and support to our researchers in IT-related matters and to check regularly and maintain peripheral equipment such as scanners, printers, projectors, monitors and TVs to ensure that these are functioning and available to users.
• Managing the IT induction process for new users and monitoring compliance.
• Procurement of equipment and services for the IT systems in the Research Complex (including the tendering process) maintaining inventories of equipment as required.
• General troubleshooting of desktop/laptop hardware and software issues, as well as general Windows, Linux and Mac support.
• Software installation, software licensing and auditing of Research Complex IT equipment.
• Installation, management and development of the IT systems for Research Complex, including Linux/UNIX servers, Windows systems, web servers etc. ensuring compliance with policy.
• To manage routine IT maintenance, including patching & backups at specified intervals. Implementing security and virus protection measures, setting up and maintaining user accounts, user groups and mail lists, and maintaining logs of usage/faults as required.
• Working with IT Networking and Security Manager as appropriate.
• Escalating problems where necessary to management or third-party suppliers.     
• Ensuring the smooth running of Research Complex IT systems, ensuring a value-added service which considers user needs and strategic requirements and which is continuously scrutinised and improved.
• Work flexibly with the other members of the User Office and Facilities Team to ensure that annual leave is coordinated and that all requirements are covered during periods of absence.
• The role may be part of a 24-hour cascade structure which, in the case of incident, will be used to inform colleagues, RAL-site Security Officers and STFC Estates personnel on issues of building and laboratory safety, security and integrity.

Working relationships: 

The role is at the centre of the core team of Research Complex, working closely with our team of technicians, user support, communications, and IT teams to coordinate and manage the effective maintenance and management of Research Complex facilities. It is the first point of contact and coordinating lead with STFC Estates Services that maintain our building.

Knowledge and experience:

Essential:

• Strong knowledge of Microsoft based operating systems with emphasis on Windows 10, but with experience of older MS operating systems.
• Experience with using and troubleshooting Microsoft Office with emphasis on MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
• Technical diagnostic skills, to enable evaluation of alternative courses of action, innovate where necessary and document solutions
• Be able to learn in the role, with a positive and collaborative approach to problem solving

Desirable: 

• Experience of Linux based operating systems with emphasis on Centos and Ubuntu
• Experience of Apple MacOS & iOS
