Translator
We are looking to strengthen and expand our Welsh translation services to enable the University to become a bilingual institution which conforms with the Welsh Language Standards. This expansion includes the appointment of an additional translator within the team.
In this role, you will be part of a high-energy and customer focused translation team working across the institution. You will be provide a high quality translation service (English > Welsh and Welsh > English) as well as undertake related duties as a member of Cardiff University’s Welsh Translation Service.
The post is full-time and open ended.
Salary: £22,847 – £27,116 per annum (Grade 4)

Job Description
Translation Service Development Duties
• Collaborate on the development of a university-wide Welsh translation service with the Head of the Translation Service and colleagues within Professional Services and Academic Schools.
• Assisting the Head of the Translation Service to resolve issues independently and use judgement and creativity to suggest the optimum resolution to issues as they occur
Operational Duties
• Assist with managing the day to day administration of the Head of the Welsh Translation Service
• Provide detailed advice and guidance on translation processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, contributing to the resolution of more complex issues
• Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures
• Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links
with the University’s Schools/Colleges and Professional Services and outside bodies as required.
• Provide a professional Welsh<>English translation service to the University, interpreting the requirements of the customer and the subject of the communication to provide contextually appropriate translations, adhering to the compliance requirements of the University and ensuring the University’s Welsh language is presented to a high and consistent Standard
• Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate
• To utilise relevant translation technology (post-editing machine translation and the University translation memory output) and software to ensure accuracy, consistency, and value for money in relation to translations.
• Instruct and guide other employees across the University in relation to Welsh translation projects
General Duties
• To undertake familiarisation with the University, its structures, aims and objectives, compliance requirements.
• To be cognisant of confidentiality and issues around personal and sensitive data in all areas of activity
• Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
• Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
1. Proven ability to communicate effectively and accurately in both Welsh and English, orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences, and at all levels
2. Experience of undertaking translation work in or for the public sector
3. Demonstrable cultural awareness in relation to Wales, and the Welsh language.
4. Proven ability to manage and prioritise own workload and to meet tight deadlines e.g. press and web releases.
Qualifications and Education
5. Educated to a degree level or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
6. Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within WelshEnglish translation
7. Experience of using translation memory software
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
8. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
9. Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solution.
Desirable Criteria
1. Experience of providing interpreting services or willingness to access appropriate training.
2. A relevant professional qualification.
3. Experience of undertaking translation work preferably within, or for, the Higher Education Sector.
4. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
5. Membership of a recognised Translation Association
