Reporting to the relevant course co-ordinator, you will prepare and teach English for Academic Purposes on programmes offered by the English Language Programmes Division, part of the Academic and Student Support Services Department.  You will have excellent teaching skills and significant, recent, classroom experience of teaching EFL to groups. You will have experience of EFL materials development and a background in EAP or ESP.  It would be an advantage for you to have a sound understanding of the workload and academic standards required to study at HE level, as well as an understanding of the issues facing international university students.

This post is part-time and fixed term from 20 September 2021 to 19 June 2022, to cover staff absence.  Minimum Working Hours: 200 hours for the duration of the contract. 

Salary: £27,511 - £31,866 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 5)

Job Description

  • To deliver teaching courses in English for Academic Purposes for an agreed number of hours per week following a timetable and guidelines provided by the Course Co-Ordinator.
  • To use the specified course projection information to prepare teaching materials and teach appropriate material for lessons, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking.
  • To select/create supplementary materials as appropriate, according to the needs of the students and in accordance with the syllabus and course aims.
  • To maintain appropriate teaching and admin records for the specified programme: e.g. - To have accessible teaching plans for the next day, keep lesson-by-lesson register of class work and attendance, to record attendance weekly for Co-ordinator, produce class reports.
  • To participate in the administration and marking of any coursework and tests, mark student assignments / homework as required and in accordance with the assessment schedule, set criteria and marking schemes.
  • To provide written/oral formative feedback to the students as appropriate.
  • To work closely with other tutors in the team to ensure that students have the best possible learning environment and experience and to pool their resources
  • To participate actively as a member of the teaching team and attend team meetings and in-house staff development programme.
  • To carry out course evaluation including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
  • To support the Course Co-ordinator in broader aspects of the teaching programme.
  • To read and respond to email contact; to use and share electronic calendars.
  • To carry out other duties and responsibilities, appropriate to the post, as required by the line manager (Head of Section or nominee)
  • All staff in the Division will be expected to work flexibly as part of the team to achieve the Division’s objectives and to perform other tasks which are not included above but which may be required from time to time to support the work of the Division, but which will be consistent with the role.

NB:
  • The post holder will be required to take holidays outside designated teaching weeks
  • The post holder will be required to teach within the English Language Programmes Division and at different locations around the University campuses, and may need to take teaching materials to those locations.  Work aids and manual handling training will be provided, if necessary

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable excellent teaching skills.
  • Excellent organisational ability including proven ability to set student targets and personal targets and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrable communication skills with a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Native speaker of English (or IELTS 9.0), qualified to degree level, with a DELTA or Trinity diploma in TEFL/TESOL or equivalent qualification or a CELTA or Trinity CERT. accompanied by ELP/ESP experience.
  • Significant recent classroom teaching experience (groups) in English as a foreign language.
  • Proven administrative experience and demonstrable experience of using IT, including word processing and e-mail.
  • EAP/ESP experience (for example, In-sessional and/or Presessional experience) and experience of EFL materials development.
  • Willingness to take annual leave outside of ELP term-time and to teach at different locations around the campus, taking/accessing teaching materials where necessary.
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching on online/blended courses.
  • Masters degree in applied linguistics in Applied Linguistics, TEFL or TESOL.
  • Experience of the workload and academic standards required to study at a higher education level with an understanding of issues facing international students entering UK Universities.

  • Additional Information

    Holidays: holiday cannot be taken during teaching weeks.
    Staff will be required to be on the premises a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of the first class of the morning / afternoon and leave no sooner than 15 minutes after the end of the last class of the day   i.e. contactable in case of staff sickness, class changes.
    The post holder may be required to teach at different locations around the University campus, and may need to take teaching materials to those locations .   

    The contract offered is a Fixed Term Framework (variable hours) contract paid monthly by timesheet.
    The minimum total hours guaranteed is 200 hours per year (from 20 September to 19 June).
