This is an exciting opportunity to join the Information Management Team at Birmingham City University as Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer. 

This role offers the opportunity to operate as an integrated member of the University community with Information Governance and Data Protection at the heart of every function.

The role will suit an experienced Data Protection Officer or Information Governance Manager, with line management of an intimate team. 

The successful candidate will play a leading role to monitor internal compliance, inform and advise on the University's Data Protection obligations, provide advice regarding Data Protection Impact Assessments and act as a contact point for the data subjects and the Information Commissioner's Office.

This role is key to developing and improving the University’s Information Governance and Data Protection provisions and will provide advice and guidance to staff across all faculties and departments.

A key aspect will be the implementation and development of policies, procedures and strategy to ensure compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and any other new information laws or best practice on information governance.

The Information Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer will be expected to develop policy and procedures, and maintain an effective information governance and data protection knowledge base, deliver presentations, and facilitate both face to face and on-line training to a wide University audience.

The Role

The successful candidate will:

  • Be the nominated DPO for the Information Commissioner's register of Data Controllers
  • Act as the primary contact and specialist in all matters concerning Data Protection and be a key stakeholder in our approach to Information Security
  • Oversee the University's systems and controls in relation to Data Protection and Information Governance
  • Keep abreast of any regulatory or other changes relating to Data Protection and Information Governance that may affect the University
  • Line manage an intimate team (including records management)

Skills and Experience Required:

The successful candidate will have:

  • A good honours degree and a postgraduate or professional qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Law, Corporate Governance, Data Protection, Information Management)
  • Proficiency and experience of Data Protection laws and implementation of data protection policies and procedures
  • Experience of providing high quality customer service in a complex environment. 
  • Proficiency of best practice information governance, including records management and retention policies.  
  • Experience of working successfully as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and in appropriate language with third parties, students and colleagues both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and explain complex regulations to third parties, students and colleagues.
  • Ability to manage own time and workload.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to support, guide and inform as necessary.
