University of Cambridge Museums

Love working with people? Passionate about making everyone feel welcome? Want to learn new skills and get experience of planning, organising and coordinating cultural engagement activities in a supportive environment?

The University of Cambridge Museums (UCM) are looking for an Inclusion Assistant Apprentice to support the inclusion and community engagement activities for a range of audiences across the Museums and Botanic Gardens, as well as in local community settings across Cambridge and the region.

You will be a natural team player with good self-motivation, commitment and willingness to learn and develop news skills in a supportive environment. This apprenticeship will provide both practical and administrative experience. It will support the work of a range of learning and engagement specialists who are passionate about making a difference to our communities, and supporting everyone to access local culture in ways that work for them. Working across a range of awe-inspiring collections from colourful blooms to Egyptian tombs, and Neolithic flints to giant prehistoric animal skeletons, you will help plan, deliver and evaluate activities working with socially-engaged practitioners and a range of audiences including adults, children and young people.

As part of the apprenticeship, completion of a Cultural Learning and Participation Level 3 Certificate is necessary. The training for this award will be provided by Westminster Adult Education Service.

It is expected that 20% of time in this role (which is full time) will be spent undertaking the relevant training to complete the apprenticeship. This is blended learning consisting of a mix of day release sessions at Westminster's London campus (NW8 8LW) and online distance learning, as well as on-the-job training, culminating in an End Point Assessment. The learning day with Westminster is Monday. The postholder will need to travel to the campus once a month (all required travel is covered.) This apprenticeship is ideally suited for someone in the early stages of a career. Interest in and commitment to the work of museums and cultural organisations would be welcomed. Upon completion of the apprenticeship there is the opportunity to remain in the role of Inclusion Assistant and for the candidate to demonstrate that they are working at a higher grade and have an opportunity to progress to Grade 4, which is currently (£25,742 to £29,605), with funds available until the end of March 2026 in the first instance.

This is an entry level role so if you are unable to list your job history, we still encourage you to apply. Feel free to list any relevant experience, such as clubs, volunteering, school work experience, other achievements or responsibilities. All are relevant. In the suitability for the role section, please answer the following questions and limit your answers to a maximum of 300 words per question:

  • What skills do you have which fit this apprenticeship?
  • What do you hope to learn from the apprenticeship, what new skills do you want to gain?
  • What makes you want to do an apprenticeship specifically?

The recruitment selection for this role will be on the 29th February 2024 midday-5pm. It will consist of a few group activities and individual interviews in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided.

At the University of Cambridge Museums (part of the Fitzwilliam Museum), we pledge to champion equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility and welcome applications from all backgrounds.
