The Lau China Institute, King’s College London is the largest China-focused research institute in the UK. Based within the School of Global Affairs, and one of five Global Institute’s, the Lau China Institute is home to a community of core academics and postgraduate students dedicated to enhancing knowledge and understanding of contemporary China.

As part of an ambitious outreach and engagement strategy, we aim to increase knowledge and understanding of China in the UK and beyond through multidisciplinary research, teaching and public engagement activities.

About the Role

The Impact and Engagement Officer will play an important role in helping to meet the Institute’s strategic external engagement goals, working as part of a dynamic team, situated within the heart of London.

The Officer will support the Impact and Engagement Manager to coordinate and deliver a programme of high-impact events – including the Institute’s annual flagship events series China Week – as well as help to develop external and internal communications tailored to the needs of a growing national and international audience based across government, media, business and academia.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an organised and creative individual to coordinate a range of engaging events on modern China such as lectures, film screenings and roundtables, and create and disseminate content through the website, social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram) and digital newsletter to increase our reach amongst audiences in the UK and overseas.

The successful candidate will work with academics, external partners and departments across King’s to coordinate both in-person and hybrid events to ensure they are delivered as smoothly as possible. They will be a key liaison between speakers and King’s venues and AV teams. They will be responsible for drafting event briefs for the website and ticketing platforms, monitoring ticket sales, identifying AV and catering needs, organising speaker travel and accommodation etc.

This is a part time post (17.5 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 November 2025. The successful candidate will be required to work occasional evenings particularly during China Week. Flexible and hybrid working with the ability to be on campus at least 1 day a week.

Essential criteria

  • Experience of coordinating projects, events planning and delivery and/or working in a communications role
  • A high standard of oral and written English, and experience tailoring content to diverse audiences
  • Vocational qualifications (HNC/NVQ3) and/or skills and experience acquired during relevant work experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and a willingness to learn
  • Initiative to complete tasks without continual supervision and to be able to make decisions based on good judgement
  • Highly organised with an ability to multi-task and work accurately under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong competency in content management and event marketing platforms such as Zoom, Mailchimp, Eventbrite/Ticket Tailor, Canva
  • Knowledge/experience of creating content for social media channels
