We are looking for a hydrologist to join us on an exciting range of projects in the Hydrological Status and Outlooks Group in the Water Resources Science Area.

You will contribute to a wide range of projects and activities on hydrological seasonal forecasting, drought research and climate change adaptation, including CANARI (Climate change in the Arctic-North Atlantic Region and Impacts on the UK) and a new global scale programme focussing on net-zero plus and adaptation, in particular working on drought research in South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

You’ll also be supporting our operational activities in the National Hydrological Monitoring Programme (https://nrfa.ceh.ac.uk/nhmp ), including the Hydrological Summary and UK Water Resources Portal (https://eip.ceh.ac.uk/hydrology/water-resources/ ), the Hydrological Outlook UK (https://hydoutuk.net/ ) and the National River Flow Archive (https://nrfa.ceh.ac.uk/ ).

Main Responsibilities

  • Undertaking assessments of hydrometeorological droughts in the UK and their association with hydroclimatic drivers in the Arctic-North Atlantic region
  • Analysing the associations between drought indicators and drought impacts in South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Assisting in the production of the monthly Hydrological Summary, monthly seasonal hydrological forecasts (Hydrological Outlook) and reporting of extreme events (such as the current drought)
  • Presenting research findings to a range of audiences in scientific papers, reports, internal and external meetings, and conferences 

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications 

  • A Second Class Honours degree or higher in earth/environmental sciences, geography, physical sciences or statistics/mathematics
  • Knowledge and interest in hydrology and environmental science is essential
