Hidalgo Limited/Coventry University wish to recruit a highly motivated Human Applied Physiologist, or other relevant applied scientist, as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate to lead an innovative project.

The post-holder will deliver a 35-month project focusing on, via industry-based data collection, the development and validation of specific algorithms to estimate personnel working in thermally challenging industries level of thermal tolerance and risk for heat-related injury. The developed algorithms will be utilised in Hidalgo Limited’s existing, and future, wearable physiological monitoring connected worker solutions.

This post will involve managing data-collection of both extensive field (within specified industries) and laboratory-based studies in the UK and overseas (e.g., USA, Europe, Middle East). The company

Hidalgo, under its brand name, Equivital, is an established Cambridge-based leading global supplier of end-to-end real-time physiological monitoring solutions for use in real-world occupational settings.

A key focus of Hidalgo is to provide actionable information on workers exposed to risk of heat-related injury/illnesses. With rising global temperatures, this is increasingly recognised as a major issue within many occupations, with approximately 1million work life-years predicted to be lost globally by 2030 due to occupational heat stroke fatalities and 70million work life-years lost because of reduced labour productivity; causing an estimated global financial loss of $2,400 billion (£1,817 billion) by 2030.

Hidalgo’s Black Ghost connected worker platform, uses algorithms to provide an actionable measure of the level of heat strain experienced by a worker and is currently used in diverse industries, e.g. first responders, oil & gas, foundries, chemical plants and military training.

What is a KTP?

Candidates should possess a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Human Applied Physiology, preferably in Environmental Physiology, or related discipline (e.g. Sport and Exercise Science). They will work between Cambridge (mainly based) and Coventry, with flexibility to work from home when suitable. They should be self-motivated, able to work independently to tight deadlines and prioritise workloads. They should have experience in managing research involving human participants. A willingness and ability to undertake field trials in the UK and overseas is essential. The ideal candidate will effectively communicate (written and verbally) with a range of stakeholders, e.g., academic, technical personnel, sales and marketing, existing customers and potential new clients. Prior knowledge in algorithm development is beneficial.
