1st September 2024 – 31th August 2025
The College proposes to appoint a 3-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Ancient Greek from September 2024 to August 2025; this is a fixed-term contract, based at Wadham College. The lecturer will be required to give on average three hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term. They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The college admits students for all the undergraduate courses in Classics and Ancient History, usually admitting 8 or 9 a year, the majority taking Classical Mods for the first five terms, followed by Literae Humaniores (‘Greats’), and with others studying the joint schools Classics & Modern Languages, Classics & English, Classics & Oriental Studies (as well as Ancient & Modern History and Classical Archaeology & Ancient History). Wadham attracts high numbers of able students who do not have A Level or equivalent in Greek, and takes seriously the need to support language learning.
Main Duties
The College is seeking a scholar with a strong commitment to teaching and a willingness to engage in all aspects of a tutor’s role. The main duties and responsibilities of the post-holder are as follows:
- To take responsibility for the teaching of Greek language, the Iliad paper for Classics Mods and the Early Greek Hexameter Poetry for Finals; they would also be expected to cover some other Greek literature papers;
- To carry out the normal duties of a College tutor, including setting and marking collections (internal termly examinations); attending Tutorial Board meetings; and to take part in the undergraduate admissions exercise (admissions interviews continue to at least to mid-December each year, and the lecturer will be expected to be involved in all stages of the process: shortlisting and interviewing);
- To have responsibility for the pastoral care of undergraduate students, and for monitoring their progress through meetings at the start and end of terms;
- to contribute to the college’s outreach programme, e.g. the regular Summer School in Classics.
It is expected that the successful candidate will have or be close to completing a doctorate, and will have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered.
The stipend will be on a scale from £7,622 per annum (the Senior Tutors’ Committee recommended scale), subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Senior Common Room, will have shared use of a room for teaching, and will be entitled to three meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply to research funds of up to £144 per annum.
