Head of the Defence Studies Department

School of Security Studies

Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy

King's College London

The Defence Studies Department which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, is one of the few academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of war, conflict resolution, security, defence and international politics and relations through inter-disciplinary teaching, research, and engagement. Based at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Wiltshire, the Department of Defence Studies is home to a vibrant community of circa 70 academic staff, and sits within the School of Security Studies, alongside the Department of War Studies, which is based in central London.

The Department, part of the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy, is now seeking to appoint a new Head of Department to continue to foster excellent research, the delivery of an exciting education portfolio, and meaningful, long-lasting relationships with key military stakeholders and the wider university.

The Department has the enviable position of being based at the UK Defence Academy, creating an unrivalled environment to deliver education to military personnel from across the world, as well as to continue to foster a research culture that thrives on, and leverages the Department’s location. Key to the success of this post will be the ability to build relationships with academic staff at all levels, as well as interdisciplinary relationships across King’s, and crucially with our Ministry of Defence partners, ensuring that professional military education continues to be delivered to the highest standards.

The post-holder will need to demonstrate a capacity for leading in teaching and research, contract negotiation and financial planning in the context of the unique position of the Defence Academy and an ability to maintain core relationships with university stakeholders. They will be committed to training, mentoring, and supporting the next generation of scholars in defence studies and associated disciplines, as well as excellent organisation skills. They will also be able to evidence leadership of people, programmes, and short courses, as well as contract management alongside financial awareness. It is also critical that the successful applicant can evidence a commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusivity with the ability to nurture a positive culture that supports the development of all staff and students.
