Job overview

We are looking to recruit a dynamic and experienced manager to co-lead our Psychoanalytic Portfolio. You will need to have a professional qualification in Adult or Child Psychotherapy and membership of the respective professional body. You will need to have substantial experience in managing the delivery of education and training, ideally including applied training programmes. 

The post holder will have specific responsibility for the applied courses which include: 

  • Developing a diverse child and adolescent workforce: an introductory course (CPD64)
  • Introduction to counselling and psychotherapy (D12) and the online version (ED12)
  • Psychodynamic reflective practice in mental health (D65)
  • Emotional care of babies, children, young people and families (EC1)
  • Perinatal, child, adolescent and family work: a psychoanalytic observational approach (M7)
  • Psychoanalytic Studies (M16)

The Head of Portfolio is jointly responsible for the operational management of the delivery of the training programmes, staff and financial management of this portfolio and with responsibility for the delivery of high-quality teaching and an excellent student learning experience within the portfolio. 

You will need to be a confident and organised individual, with a tenacious and self-motivated approach to work with a flair for creativity and innovation, ensuring our offer remains relevant to a contemporary workforce.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have a key strategic role in developing new business opportunities; will need to be externally facing, engaged with relevant professional and workforce developments in relation to their area of delivery and have the capacity to translate these developments into high quality Trust provision. 

The post holder will contribute to the development and implementation of strategy, advising and leading on the needs of a range of professions across the health and social care workforce. 

Working with the Co- Head of Portfolio, the post holder will produce annual EDI action plan to enhance the student offer and support the wider development of the Trust’s education and training portfolio, including digital and blended provision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Leadership 

  • Work closely with the joint Head of Psychoanalytic Portfolio, Directors of Education, Course Leads and their teams and professional services teams to manage and plan the portfolio’s organisation and functioning. This includes taking a key role in the identification and resolution of operational/logistical issues in effective course delivery.
  • Meet fortnightly with the respective Director of Education and participate in the monthly Portfolio Management meetings.

Working collaboratively with the joint Head of Portfolio: 

  • Organise and manage regular portfolio meetings and ensure regular liaison with course teams.
  • Develop, review and evaluate Portfolio Equality Action Plans to inform and respond to EDI data reporting across Protected Characteristics.
  • Work closely with the Development Project Manager, Head of Digital and Library Services and others to develop and implement new methods of delivery across the portfolio, including online and blended courses.
  • Develop new and innovative learning opportunities across workforce bandings to cater for the differential training needs of staff in the health, social care, and voluntary sectors, including CPD, conferences and validated academic programmes.
  • Prepare briefing reports for the Education & Training Executive, the Education & Training Committee and Trust Board of Directors as required.
  • Contribute to the Tavistock academy activities including HEA fellowships.

Staff Management 

  • Line management of all relevant staff including recruitment, and performance management, adherence to policies, procedures, processes, and risk identification and management.
  • Conducting regular appraisal and development review meetings, in order to review progress, set goals and ensure continuing professional and personal development.
  • Lead and oversee staff in the development and implementation of systems and processes to manage the pipeline of existing DET business activity and opportunities within the areas of responsibility detailing all related business planning activity.

Publicity and Marketing 

  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications and the Student Admissions Team to identify markets and strategies for increasing the profile and market reach of the portfolio of courses to increase student recruitment.
  • Review and update programme specifications, website content, and other relevant marketing material with course tutors and the Marketing & Communications team, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

Student Recruitment 

  • Work closely with colleagues in the division to ensure an efficient and robust recruitment process is adhered to, ensuring that the Trust recruitment policy, where relevant, professional body requirements and Home Office and UKVI stipulations are adhered to.
  • Work closely with the Executive to establish sustainable recruitment targets and maximise curriculum design and delivery to support wide and varied recruitment and access to Trust courses.

Financial Management 

  • Have oversight of and responsibility for the portfolio’s income and expenditure through engagement with the budgeting and forecasting process and monitoring actual income and spend on a regular basis. This should include ensuring visiting lecturer spend is in line with budget forecast by instituting planned contracted, budgeted activity, as opposed to ad hoc pool claims.
  • Contributing to target setting for courses in the portfolio, to ensure courses are on a financially sustainable footing, and provide optimum student experience. Regular reporting to the Director of Education and the Education & Training Executive will be required.
  • Work with Course Leads and other colleagues to identify ways to increase the financial contribution of the Portfolio.

Curriculum Development and Management 

  • Establish and oversee within the relevant portfolio(s) processes to ensure: 
  • Effective operational management of course delivery including timetabling.
  • Regular review of curriculum content, study packs and Moodle.
  • Implementation of curriculum development/changes with an emphasis on flexible delivery and access.
  • Effective practice placements (where relevant) meet the course and commissioner requirements.
  • Active engagement in identifying the needs and concerns of the wider workforce and developing programmes responsive to identified need at all levels of the workforce. This will also require close working with other Head of Portfolios.
  • Identify and implement a range of pedagogical approaches to achieve required learner outcomes and engage with differing requirements of specific learning groups.
  • Develop and deploy a range of blended delivery models, taking an active role in the implementation of the Trust’s commitment to digital approaches in all our provision.

Student Assessment 

  • Establish and oversee processes for: 
  • Efficient management of assessment systems including Assessment and Progression Boards, in close collaboration with the relevant DET functions (including course administration, academic governance and quality assurance, etc.).
  • Timely working with External Examiner/s to ensure timely response to recommendations, and succession planning for new External Examiners.
  • Review and analysis of outcome patterns, using this analysis to inform the management of student progression.

Student Pastoral Care 

  • Ensure the following are in place: 
  • A sound personal tutorial system for each student, with good communication between tutor and other teachers and that students are aware of the student advice and consultation service.
  • Process for timely response to student complaints as per our university partners relevant complaints procedures including leading on investigations regarding student complaints.

Quality and Enhancement 

  • Participate in ARC process and associated periodic audit and review process by QAA, Essex/UEL and professional accrediting bodies (i.e. AFT, BPS and BPC).
  • Analyse annual student data and feedback in relation to Equality, diversity and inclusion and ensure Portfolio Equality Action Plans are informed by and set objectives in relation to these data. Work actively with Course Leads and colleagues to promote the Trust’s EDI agenda, encouraging innovative approaches and solutions.
  • Ensure tutors respond to student feedback, gleaned through meetings, feedback exercises and complaints.
  • Recruit teaching staff according to the Trust’s appointment procedure and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies and action plans.
  • Ensure that the portfolio is engaged in the peer review process and analysis is undertaken of the outcomes.
  • Review developmental and CPD needs of teaching staff, including participation in the Advance HE fellowship scheme.
  • Develop processes for service user participation and feedback.
  • To work within the scope of the academic year timetable and with the procedures and policies implemented by division professional services in providing a professional student-centered service.

Liaison with External Bodies 

Ensure the following liaison processes are in place: 

  • With accrediting and professional bodies and university partners as appropriate.
  • For the provision of advance information to accrediting bodies, panels and organisations.
  • Ensure staff are available to participate in periodic reviews by accrediting organisations as well as contribute relevant and timely report

General 

  • To ensure the development, maintenance and dissemination of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes.
  • To take part in an annual appraisal jointly with the respective Director of Education, to include agreeing objectives and a professional development plan. It is expected that some study leave will be taken for attending conferences, reading relevant literature, writing papers for presentation at Tavistock-organised and other conferences.
  • To attend mandatory training events as set out in the Trust Staff Training Policy, which includes attendance at induction, and ongoing training in fire safety, health and safety, infection control, risk management, safeguarding children and participate in clinical effectiveness activity and appraisal.
  • To comply with all relevant policies and procedures of the Trust.
  • If registered with a professional body, to comply with the code of conduct of that professional body. The trust will take appropriate action if codes of conduct are breached.
