Salary: Grade 6. £50,000 - £60,000. Please note, for internal applicants the salary will be reflected by pay and award policy

Working arrangements:  35 hours per week between 8am and 6pm. Hybrid working - you will be required to work in the office a minimum of 6 days per month. This role requires travel within the UK and attendance at evening and some weekend events.

An exciting opportunity to join a high-performing fundraising team and help shape our new fundraising strategy to improve patient care and reduce ill health across communities.

As Head of Philanthropy, you’ll hold a senior role in a busy team and lead our efforts to bring major donors into long term relationships with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

Your core responsibility will be to grow our pool of major donors and find opportunities to engage face-to-face with prospective supporters at the major gift level.

You’ll be trusted to work autonomously to develop and implement a new major gifts strategy to achieve our fundraising targets.

You’ll report to and work closely with the Director of Development and have the full support and involvement of the President, College Officers, Trustees, and CEO.

Purpose and scope

Responsibilities

  • Making recommendations to help shape the overall strategic goals of our multi-year fundraising campaign to ensure that we deliver our ambitious income generation targets
  • Developing and implementing the RCP's major donor engagement strategy to ensure that your own targets for annual income from major donors are successfully achieved
  • Working with the President, College Officers, Trustees, CEO, and Executive Directors, to grow and manage your portfolio of major donor prospects and to optimise these relationships through regular cultivation meetings and stewardship events
  • Ensuring our database is being used optimally to identify prospects, to help build better relationships and to effectively target our efforts
  • Supporting and line managing the Development Administrator, including setting targets and providing support in ensuring that these are met
  • Supporting the Director of Development in the management of key donor and stakeholder relationships and by contributing to department-wide planning
  • Planning ahead and taking a multi-year outlook to ensure our major donor pipeline supports the RCP's ambitions in both current and future years
  • Expanding the programme of major donor events and engagement activities
  • Ensuring due diligence on prospective major donors and adherence to internal processes and procedures for fundraising, reporting, financial and information management

About you

  • A substantial track record of meeting 6 figure+ income targets either in fundraising or an equivalent results-oriented environment
  • An entrepreneurial approach and experience in negotiating and influencing others
  • Exceptional interpersonal, networking, and communication skills
  • An articulate and persuasive written style and the ability to produce high quality, compelling proposals
  • Experience of line management, budget management and events management
  • Confidence in maintaining and establishing relationships with senior individuals and organisations
