GUSS User Experience Designer

Job Purpose

This role is aimed at University students who will be responsible for designing user experiences within software products for internal and external commissioned software development projects as part of the School of Computing Science’s Glasgow University Software Service (GUSS) initiative. A pool of candidates will be recruited with combined skills and experience that covers user experience design and assigned to software development projects that are compatible with their skills. UX designers will work within multi-disciplinary teams including a project manager and GUSS software engineers.

GUSS has the following objectives:

•  To enhance the impact of University of Glasgow research and operations via the creation and maintenance of software applications.

•  To provide students with meaningful work experience that helps to advance their employability, student experience and longer-term career prospects.

•  To enable collaborations between the School of Computing Science and other areas of the University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.  Interpretation and translation of user requirements in collaboration with a Project Manager.

2.  Design of user experiences within software applications, including user interfaces, user journeys and workflows, graphic design, branding, and logos, as directed by the project’s manager and in partnership with software engineers in the team.

3.  Liaising with the Project Manager and GUSS leadership team to provide progress updates, advise of technical challenges and request support for solutions.

4.  Documentation of features and designs as appropriate and as directed by the Project Manager.

5.  Provision of technical assistance and advice to users on the use of the systems developed as appropriate, from a UX design perspective.

6.  Diagnosing and solving issues within designs as appropriate and proposing solutions within areas of expertise.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.

Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Knowledge and understanding of user experience design processes, practices and tools and their relationship to software engineering practices.

A3 Knowledge of user experience design processes.

Desirable:

B1 Experience of software development in a professional or consultancy setting.

B2 Knowledge and understanding of software development practices.

Skills 

Essential:

C1 The ability to identify and rank priority tasks based on competing service users’ needs.

C2 Ability to use initiative and a willingness to work flexibly in order to meet tight deadlines.

C3 Communication skills, ability to convey complex technical data in simple manner.

C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a remote, flexible team.
C5 Good interpersonal skills for working directly with end users and project stakeholders.

Experience

Essential: 

E1 Experience of working with at least one user interface design environment, such as Figma and associated workflows.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of using change management practices and modern software tools, such as Git and GitLab, to support these.

F2 Experience developing designs for mobile and web applications.

F3 Experience of working with game and VR design technologies such as Unity.

F4 Experience of working with open source repositories with due consideration to the licensing terms associated with use of code and solutions from these sources.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £22,681 - £25,138 per annum pro rata.

This post is part time (maximum of 10 hours per week and will be agreed on an individual basis) and fixed term for up to 6 months.
