Location: Francis Crick Institute, London or Babraham Institute, Cambridge

Contract: Permanent, 35 hours per week (flexible working requests will be considered)

Salary: £67,000 - £72,000 per annum

Cancer Research Horizons is the newly established in-house CRUK drug discovery and commercialisation unit, with a principal focus on establishing and prosecuting biologically themed multi-project alliances with industrial partners. Cancer Research Horizons is home to over 200 drug discovery scientists and is based on several sites across the UK.


There is now an exciting opportunity available for a talented and ambitious drug discovery scientist to join Cancer Research Horizons as a Group Leader in the Bioscience team. The team is comprised of highly skilled cancer cell biologists and immunologists working across the entire drug discovery pipeline and alliance portfolio. Expertise spans target identification and validation, clinical positioning and bioinformatics, and the team routinely performs genetic manipulation, proof of concept and mechanism of action studies and novel cellular assay development. The role could be based at either the Francis Crick Institute in London or the Babraham Institute in Cambridge.



  • What will you be doing?

  • Leading, mentoring and developing a team of 5-10 cell biologists

  • Setting and maintaining the highest scientific standards

  • Providing flexible project support and motivating team members to maximise their potential

  • Developing future Bioscience capability and expertise

  • Providing critical input into target and alliance prosecution rationale

  • Overseeing a themed area of biology and/or leading one or more projects

  • Playing a leading role in interactions with our academic and industry partners



  • Who are we looking for?

  • Innovative scientist with a strong background in oncology or immuno-oncology

  • A track record of delivery in drug discovery, ideally in the commercial sector

  • Strong leadership skills with a passion for developing others

  • External network and scientific presence with the ability to forge relationships, and work in collaboration, with both academic and industrial stakeholders

  • Experience of driving operational and scientific innovations

  • Flexible mindset, with the ability to adapt to new challenges
