This new full time post is available from October 2022 on a fixed term basis until November 2023. This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.

Summary of the role

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant to support the work of Dr Louisa Evans, Dr Tomas Chaigneau, Dr Matt Fortnam and Dr Rachel Turner on the The Sustainable Development and Resilience of Coastal Communities in the UK (ROCC) project. This UKRI Strategic Priority Fund on Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources funded post is available immediately for 12 months. The successful applicant will support the research undertaken under work-package one and three which aim to develop a ‘nexus’ approach to enhance the resilience and wellbeing of coastal communities and ensure sustainable use of marine resources in the UK. This post will include a focus on marine resource-users’ experiences of responding to environmental and policy change, and will analyse the perspectives and decision-making processes of managers and policy-makers.

The post will include:

  • Liaising closely with ROCC project partners and initiating broad stakeholder engagement in the project.
  • Designing, collating and analysing surveys of diverse marine resource-users in the South-West UK.
  • Collecting and analysing qualitative interview data with managers and policy-makers.
  • Collaborating on scientific publications and conference presentations.
  • Contributing to development of other project outputs including policy briefs, web content, presentations and project reports.

About you

The successful applicant will have expertise in social science research methods. They will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in marine/environmental social science and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Applicants will be able to:

- Communicate effectively with stakeholders from fishers to national policy-makers.

- Confidently collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data.

- Work as part of a research team, contributing ideas on concepts, methods and impact.
