Applications are invited for a Full Professor of Materials Chemistry post within UCD School of Chemistry.
The UCD School of Chemistry invites applications for a Full Professor position in Materials Chemistry under the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative (SALI) Call 2019, in line with the requirements set out in the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Call document.
The Senior Academic Leadership Initiative gives priority to highly qualified female candidates within the boundaries of what is legally permissible, in order to address their underrepresentation; preferential consideration of female candidates is excluded if other reasons worthy of legal protection, prevail. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who are in a minority or protected under Irish social legislation, or who also belong to an underrepresented minority in academic posts may be approved if the institution can clearly articulate reasons worthy of legal protection as to why they should be considered.
More information about the objectives of the SALI Initiative can be found under the section covering
"Further Information for Candidates" below, and also at:
UCD School of Chemistry
The School has a long-established track record in research and innovation and our 28 academic staff have expertise in the fields of Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Sustainable Chemistry, and Nanoscience, as well as Chemistry Education. The School is located in buildings that were recently refurbished to state-of-the-art standards. We host approximately 100 PhD students and 20 postdoctoral researchers, and our research is focused on four main themes:
- Chemistry at the interface of Biology and Medicine
- Synthesis of Molecules
- Functional Materials
Research in these areas is supported by excellent laboratory facilities, a variety of sophisticated instrument suites (mass spectrometry, NMR, chromatography, X-ray crystallography, magnetometry, TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, XRD, AFM, etc.) and excellent research support infrastructure (software, databases, online journal access, administrative & technical support, etc.). Ireland is home to a large number of indigenous and multinational pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical devices, electronics, and materials companies, with whom we have strong contacts.
The School has substantial activity in the area of nanomaterials, encompassing both hard (magnetic materials, nanoparticle preparation and characterisation) and soft (polymers, gels, dyes) materials. It is committed to building a critical mass of researchers in the general area of Materials Chemistry (making four recent hires in this area), and now wishes to make a strategic appointment at senior level to provide leadership, mentorship and vision, in order to maximize academic and scholarly outputs. It is relevant to note that currently there is no Professor in Inorganic Chemistry in the School, and a Professor of Materials Chemistry who had a background in Inorganic Chemistry would provide leadership in that section. The person appointed will be expected to become a leading figure within Ireland's Chemistry community, sustain an internationally important research team, and interact with other disciplinary areas within the university. The appointee will also be expected to take full advantage of large scale national research funding opportunities (for example, through Science Foundation Ireland https://www.sfi.ie/about-us/), together with research funding streams available through the European Union and other international agencies.
The School is strongly committed to family-friendly work policies and to the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and is in the process of applying for an Athena SWAN Bronze Award.
Applicants are required to submit a statement clearly outlining how you meet the criteria of this particular post in relation to the stated objectives of the Senior Academic Leadership Initiative (see below), or detail any exceptional circumstances as to why you should be considered for this post.

- Dedicated statement of suitability for this particular post (max 300 words). The statement provided will form part of the initial eligibility screening process for this particular post.
