The Role and the Department 
Durham University seeks to employ a Food and Beverage Service Head to lead the catering operations across Stephenson and Ustinov Colleges. 

Stephenson College is located on the Howlands site, south of the city, it houses over 400 undergraduate and postgraduate self-catered students. Ustinov College is located at Sheraton Park at Nevilles Cross and houses over 400 postgraduate self-catered students.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and innovative individual with excellent communication skills and extensive high-profile, high volume food service management and multi-site experience.

This exciting role requires the highest standard of service delivery, promoting student experience and customer satisfaction. It may appeal to candidates from a variety of catering sectors, including those from within the 4 or 5 star hotel sector, who wish to diversify into an exciting new industry with numerous benefits including generous pension contributions and work-life balance.

This role is a permanent position within the University’s Operations Directorate, offering flexibility to work any five days within a working week, including some evenings, in alignment with business requirements.

The primary responsibility involves overseeing the food and beverage service operations and teams across both Colleges, broadly encompassing banqueting, buffets and two college bars.

Our college bars are developmental spaces and the hub of the college community. They are used by our students as a place to study, work on group projects, and enjoy a broad range of events, both academic related and social. Banqueting and buffets are generally provided to build college community, some are informal, others are formal college dinners that follow the plated banquet service format.

The Colleges Operations Directorate forms part of the Colleges and Student Experience Division, which is responsible for providing a world class student experience to our diverse student community.  

The Colleges Operations Directorate plays an integral role in providing excellent services and facilities to support the personal development of students. The services provided by the Directorate include catering, housekeeping and reception.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications/Experience
1.    Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics or a Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.
2.    Experience and expertise in the development and delivery of hospitality and catering services. 
3.    Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.   
4.    Experience of implementing policies and procedures.
5.    Experience of supervising/managing a team and/or a line management qualification.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
6.    Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
7.    Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams

8.    Committed to continuing professional development.
9.    Ability to plan and organise events and activities involving the service.
10.    Ability to solve problems as part of a team and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.
11.    Ability to participate in networks to share and discuss good practice and exchange information.
12.    Ability to contribute to operational planning activities.

Desirable Criteria

1.Relevant first aid qualification

2. Relevant Health and Safety Qualification (e.g., IOSH)

3. Personal Licence Experience

4. Experience of working within an FE/HE environment or similar, specifically in relation to student staff and customers

5. Working knowledge of computerised event booking systems

6. Working knowledge of month-end stock taking

7. Knowledge of HACCP

8. Knowledge of HR procedures

9. Working knowledge of EPOS (electronic point of sale till systems)

Service Delivery

•    Liaise with other service areas to ensure the most diverse and accessible delivery and promotion of the wider student experience
