Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Job Type: PartTime
Deadline: 18 Apr 2024

Wadham College proposes to appoint a 6-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in English from September 2024 to April 2025, to cover for a period of leave by Professor Jane Griffiths; this is a fixed-term contract, based at Wadham College.

The lecturer will be required to give on average six hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term, although the teaching load is likely to be significantly heavier during Michaelmas Term (October – November) than Hilary Term (January – March). They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The College admits an average of eight undergraduates a year to study single honours English, and also admits students studying English in conjunction with History, Classics and Modern Languages.

Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending Tutorial Board meetings, and taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.

The lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for teaching Paper 3 of the second and third year English curriculum (covering the period 1550-1660), as well as covering a substantial portion of the dedicated Shakespeare paper. Details of the English curriculum can be found at https://www.english.ox.ac.uk/course-structure

It is expected that the successful candidate will have or be close to completing a doctorate, and will have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK before the post can be confirmed. Please note that the stipend offered for this post means that the College is not in a position to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.

The stipend will be on a scale from £15,244 p.a., subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Senior Common Room, will have shared use of a room for teaching, and will be entitled to six meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply to research funds of up to £289 p.a., and will be awarded a small allowance (currently £374 p.a) to entertain undergraduates as part of regular pastoral contact; both will be offered pro rata during the period of appointment.

Applications, consisting of a covering letter (detailing the candidate’s suitability for the post) and a curriculum vitae, should be emailed to the Academic Administrator at [email protected] by noon on Thursday 18th April. Applicants should ask two referees to e-mail references directly to [email protected] by the same date. Interviews for this position will likely be held during the week commencing 29th April.
