Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of manager of the Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy (FILM) within the Cardio-Respiratory interface Section of the National Heart and Lung Institute. The position will be full time, open-ended, ideally to start from 1st October 2022, and will based at the South Kensington campus.

This is a senior support staff post which was created in 2006 and has evolved to run the cross-College light microscopy facility FILM (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/facility-for-imaging-by-light-microscopy/ ), with two sites on the South Kensington and Hammersmith campus.  The purpose of the post is to provide a professional, effective, and efficient management, technical and administrative service for the FILM Facility.  You will provide advice and guidance to the academic facility lead (Prof. Cristina Lo Celso) in developing the facility and liaise with managers and administrative staff within Imperial College on aspects of facility management and finances.  You will have direct responsibility for the day-to-day running and maintenance of complex equipment that is housed in the laboratory to ensure a comprehensive, high-quality service to users.

You will provide specialist technical expertise in the field of light microscopy and imaging.  In maintaining the FILM facility you will be responsible for setting, reviewing and updating standards and protocols to ensure a quality service.  You will be expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the highest professional level over the full range of services.  Using your professional judgement, you will be expected to advise users on the analysis and interpretation of results and lead on seeking funding and implementing new technologies for the development of the facility.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsibility for all aspects of the FILM Facility – including day-to-day responsibilities for the co-ordination and supervision of the Facility ensuring that the technical service provided is regularly reviewed in terms of customer/user satisfaction

  • Laboratory management of the FILM Facility, i.e., day-to-day coordination and running of the laboratory including management responsibilities for the FILM support technicians (currently two).

  • Ensure that all equipment is maintained in optimum working order through regular calibration and testing.

  • Manage service contracts to ensure that machines are adequately covered and liaise with engineers when required

  • Provide up-to-date technical expertise, advice and support to a very high standard in imaging techniques.

  • Data analysis: managing an infrastructure for automated image data analysis. Ensure reliable and effective infrastructure for data transfer and manual and automated image data analysis.  Provide help and advice for image analysis projects (e.g. using Fiji, Icy, Huygens, Imaris)


Essential requirements

  • BSc in a suitable subject

  • Experience of management of a small team.

  • Extensive experience in developing and/or applying either computational image analysis pipelines, or a specific light microscopy technique eg lightsheet, superresolution, two photon microscopy, intravital microscopy, FLIM

  • Experience with in vivo models and relevant health and safety and legal requirements

  • Experience in tendering process for large pieces of equipment

  • Experience in recruitment of staff

  • Broad knowledge of biologically applicable light microscopy techniques
