Are you an Environmental Scientist wanting to join an inclusive organisation who carries our impactful scientific research? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join a research team within the Emissions, Sources, Sinks and Solutions group at our Edinburgh site!

You will contribute to a range of projects including the UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory, exploring land-based and agricultural climate mitigation scenarios and strategies for the UK to achieve Net Zero. The focus of this role will be developing and applying cutting-edge methods to improve and advance our capabilities in generating high resolution, high quality environmental data in support of climate change reporting, monitoring and policy goals. 

Main repsonsilbities

  • Develop scenario models to explore current and emerging policies for climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Processing and analysis of observational data at a range of spatial scales
  • Identify and implement efficiency savings for existing dataset compilation and submission processes
  • Preparing and reporting results in written and oral form for a range of audiences, e.g. presentations, contract reports, journal papers
  • Developing project proposals in collaboration with colleagues and external partners
  • Contributing to the annual deliverables for the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector of the UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory including data collection, updating and running models, QA/QC and collating and presenting final datasets

Selection Criteria

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • A PhD, or equivalent experience in an environmental / natural science discipline
  • Publication record in the form of e.g. scientific journal papers, contract reports, model code / packages

Experience/Proven abilities related to the position

  • Fluent in computer coding for modelling and data analysis (preferably R)
  • Experience of storing, manipulating and analysing large datasets
  • Ability to work to specific customer requirements and deadlines
  • Experience of implementing and conducting Quality Assurance / Quality Control of models and datasets
  • Experience of leading (or significant contributions to) publications / reports and provision of high quality data

Skills 

  • Confident communication and interpersonal skills (written and oral) with an ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences 
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team, taking the lead as and when
  • appropriate 
  • Resolves everyday problems unaided but seeks advice when appropriate
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, balancing workload and communicating with line management when appropriate
  • Confidence to identify, suggest and implement efficiencies and savings
  • Ability to develop effective internal and external collaborations

Other Requirements

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and EU for occasional meetings

Desirable skills 

  • Experience of MS Access and / or Oracle database design and management
  • Experience of high performance computing
  • Experience with modern version control methods and software
  • Knowledge of VBA and XML
  • Knowledge and understanding of ecosystem and / or agricultural processes which control the fluxes of carbon and greenhouse gases between the land and the atmosphere
