We’re looking for an Academic English Tutor who both could, and who ultimately wants, to work across our full range of programmes. Whilst our academic year can be dominated by very large Pre-sessional programmes, we’re also busy with in-year academic language and skills, contributions to Foundation programmes, and intensive general English courses, to name but just three.

With that in mind, flexibility and recognizing the positives of potential role variety is a key need, and we’d suggest a significant factor if you’re going to enjoy your time with us.

You’d be joining a good Centre – we’re internally comfortable that we more than got through the constant external unpredictability of recent years, and it seems like we’re doing the right thing with the British Council (still) rating us as having more areas of strength than any other University Centre.

But the reality is that you’d also be joining a group of people who are continuously questioning what we do, and not always with pedagogical and organisational agreement. Every time we do something, we probably end up with as many questions as answers, and we would probably also say the post-Covid period has increased these questions. Again, this kind of environment should be one that appeals.

What we need is a colleague who enjoys challenges, will complete tasks when there are always reasons not to, and who can solve teaching puzzles both in and outside the classroom.

In that context, your ability to do the role as described – within a reasonable period of time and with genuine support - should be a given. It’s also fairly obvious that the more qualifications and experience you have, the more the chance to shine in the application process. However, we’d really like it if that ability comes with significant enthusiasm, examples of what you’ve achieved, or quite frankly how you’ve failed, learned and got better.

Ultimately we really need to know that whoever joins us will add to the ‘well, we can...’ conversations, not the ‘we can’t…’,  and we’ll be looking for that in the process. In other words, work with us to identify and solve the challenges and then teach with distinction what we come up with.
