Do you have a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Material Engineering or a related area? Come help us build interactive technology to enable older people stay independent in their own homes.
You will join a new research project called Elder Athletes and Incidental Interaction. The goal is to design interactive technology that helps older people build strength, balance and visual orientation by using familiar actions like getting out of a chair, pulling a door closed, putting a can on a shelf, or getting out of bed. Your role will be to develop the smart electronic materials and devices that the user will interact with. For example, these may include augmenting home furnishings (cushions, door handles, floor mats etc) with sensors that enable them to detect force/movement and with lights/actuators to give motivating feedback.
You will need to hold a PhD* or have equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a relevant area, for example Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Material Engineering. You will also need some experience of developing or using smart materials (this might include, for example, using printed functional materials, printed electronic actuators, wearable sensors, e-textiles, home-based sensors, or Internet of Things (IoT) sensors).
You will join a supportive, multidisciplinary project team which will include two other research fellows: a human computer interface specialist who will design the interaction protocols and software; and a biomechanical specialist who will test the interactive technology with users. You will also be supported by project investigators (Prof Chris Freeman. Prof mc Schraefel, and Dr Martin Warner) who have extensive experience in developing interactive technologies to promote and support health (see https://wellthlab.soton.ac.uk/ for details of our related projects). You will also work with our project partners from the NHS, industry and local stroke groups during co-design and testing of the interactive devices. You will be based in Electronics and Computer Science, and will use our printed electronics labs as well as our movement laboratories in the Faculty of Health Science. You will demonstrate a keenness to build your research skills and succeed at an international level. In return for your effort, we are committed to help you build your career.
If you have a suitable background, and are interested in developing technology to benefit older people, then please join us. If you have any questions, please contact Prof Chris Freeman directly at [email protected]
